change to tivo

rang VM up to change tv package to a freeview option. got offered a tivo box to replace my v+ box. no problem but i was told there was no installation cost as i can do a self install. however looking online it says self install is not available with the tivo box. i am already a customer and no new cabling is required so is a self install usual practice or not?

This tread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11...uickstart.html started by Ben says that you can now do a self install of the Tivo box.

He does state that it's currently only available if you phone them up so it wouldn't show on the website.

I thought that initial install was engineer only.

Used to be because of Tivo's 'sensitive signal levels'. However that was cobblers designed to rake in more money on installation charges. Whoever installs it, iPlayer won't work properly....

QuickStart is available now but apparently not for every situation.

Also, I have seen several threads opened on the Virgin Media forum that suggests these Quickstarts don't always go well and engineers have to be dispatched anyway.

No, it wasn't, as spiderplant said on the other thread

No, it was to save money. Sending a QuickStart then sending a tech to correct the signals would have been double cost. We've now improved our remote network diagnostics to the point where QuickStart of TiVos is viable. A QuickStart will only be permitted where our tests show the signals are already good enough.

Currently, phone lines aren't available as part of a Quickstart install, so that's the main factor

There are also rules around how long ago services have been active at a property, in case the cables have been damaged etc.
