40"tv to Windows 7 pc help please

I am an old forum member but had to reregister has manofdevon111 because my log in would not work as manofdevon.

I purchased a 40" tv today (£199 at Sainsbury sale) and want to use the tv solely as a pc monitor. (I am into corel painter x3 and a large screen is preferable)

The tv manual shows a vga to vga is usuable so that's the way I want to go.

Can I leave my existing amplifier/speakers to cope with sound and not worry about using the tv speakers?

Any other advice welcome, before I connect. (it looks like the vga to tv is a D.sub15 type at the tv end so I will have to get a new lead tomorrow)

Thanks for any help on here.

analogue/digital, what are you saying, I am not going to be using the tv for its conventional usage, solely connected to the pc for large screen?

VGA is an analogue signal HDMI and DVI are digital

He's saying VGA will result in reduced quality and should only be used if unavoidable.

You'll find compared to a normal monitor it'll be crap, the pixels will be ridiculously large, it'll be blurrier than a proper monitor and the end result will be unsatisfying, possibly even causing you nausea (as I found out when I tried my father in laws 37 inch TV as a monitor, it was ... well crap. A £199 TV as a monitor... presumably you'll be watching it at a typical monitor distance away, versus the distance that you watch TV from ?

This is the big reason why TV screens don't make fantastic monitors, they're designed to be viewed from 6+ feet away, versus 18 inches or so for a monitor.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Oh and if your PC has a HDMI output on the graphics card, use that in preference to VGA or anything else.

You'll HAVE to use your exisiting sound setup if you use VGA ;)

I only have vga at present from my PC ( on my 23" present monitor)so that is the norm for me anyway.

I admit I am concerned re the visual effect of the large screen but I should be 5ft. away from monitor.

If viewing is crap I should be able to return to Sainsbury on their return option.

This vga D sub 15 plug on tv, does it mean I need to use the same connection at the pc end. Which I assume means its that smaller female type socket?

Or would this work also?
