Soundbar Problem on HD Channels

Hi, I have connected a soundbar to my cable box using an optical cable.
I have noticed that on some (not all) HD channels, the sondbar doesnt work.
For example on BBC 1 HD it sounds like a machine gun, switch to 'normal' BBC1 and it works fine. Doesn't seem to be a problem with ITV HD, but does it with some of the other HD channels as well.

Sounds like some sort of interference, any ideas what I could do to clear it ?

Many Thanks.

Colins

Does the soundbar support Dolby digital? If not that could be the reason.

I'd say that was definitely the problem. Try turning off Dolby in the box menus.

Thanks for the replies, please be aware you are dealing with a technical imbecile here !!!!
How do get the box settings up on the tv, I can only get the tv settings up, but the optical cable runs between the cable box ad the soundbar, so I assume I need to alter the cable box settings.

Any ideas ?

Regards,

You haven't said which cable box you've got, so...

If it's TiVo, press the Home button, select Help&Settings, then Settings, then Audio, the Dolby Digital, and change it to "Dolby Digital to PCM".

If it's V+, press the Home button, select Settings, then "Change Display & Audio Settings", and change "HDMI Audio Override" to "Off".

I don't have V-HD to hand and can't remember the exact menus, but you'd start by pressing the Home button, selecting Settings, then "Change Display & Audio Settings". Then it'll be something about Dolby or HDMI audio. You want to set it to "Off", "Stereo" or "PCM".
