HDMI 2 Way Splitter
 

My new TV has 3 HDMI inputs but I need a 4th for my DVD player.

I understand that I can solve this with a 2 way HDMI splitter whereby the Virgin Box and DVD player would share the TVs 3rd HDMI input.

Do I need an active or passive splitter and which one should I get so that they can transmit independently of each other without any loss of picture and sound quality.

Advice would be very much appreciated.

You need an HDMI switch, not a splitter. (A splitter would be used to connect one source to two displays). Anyway, I'd recommend a manual switch as automatic ones can be a bit problematic.

Get a switch not a splitter.

Pay extra for a auto switching one, then you can hide it.
