Will deleting obsolete series links improve performance?
 

Due to my working hours, I often watch television throughout the time when the V+ box freezes for updates- about 3.15am onwards at the moment.

I wondered if deleting my old series links would reduce the unesponsive time of the box?

My thinking is that the box won't be wasting time searching for programmes to record that it is never going to find as the series are long finished.

It takes AGES to delete series links, with long delays between the screens, so I'd like to know that I won't be wasting my time beforehand :D

I'm going to go for "probably". But have you considered a full reformat instead? Much quicker and easier as long as you don't mind losing everything.

I have thought about doing this, but it would mean having to reset many series links and, as you say, I will lose everything.

Looks like I'm going to have to decide on the lesser of two evils :D

Lol, I'm still undecided whether to go for a TiVo or pull out of Pay TV altogether. I have been monitoring my recordings and found that most of my viewing is on channels available FTA.

Does the TiVo not store obsolete series links and/or stop being responsive for long periods in order to update itself?

This used to be a problem for me with the V+ box, and after midnight it became a nightmare to watch recordings. These problems are not present on the TIVO.

Tbh, I wouldn't be without my TIVO box now - however, if all your viewing tends to be Freeview, maybe you should give up on pay TV.

But don't do that without considering the benefits of a Netflix subscription. We access Netflix regularly and wouldn't like to do without that either now!

The Series Links on TiVo automatically link from one series to the next, so they only become obsolete if a series is never shown again.

Thanks for the advice everybody.

I looked at the VM 'Collections' and they only seemed to advertise M+, L and XL. Do you have to make a special request for the TiVo M package? :confused:

The Starter Collection has M TV (not to be confused with MTV :))

I too like my TiVo, it really does what it is supposed too. But, like the OP, most of our viewing is on FTA. I'd miss Film4 HD and Sky 1HD but can live without those. And really only interested in the HD channels for the DD 5.1 sound content. Worse thing is I really have gotten used the the 30 second flip-back when fast forwarding - which we do a lot - in fact it has become extremely useful. Using my Pana HDD recorder I find myself shuffling back and forward to get to the start of the next part on a commercial channel. Or to miss out the banal "coming up"!

Our contract expires in October (been with VM for years but had to renew for a year to get a reduced price on the package). So my TiVo and the subscription package will go. But who to go for for broadband?

Oddly (IIRC) Film 4 HD is actually in M+ on VM, as opposed to XL.

Lol! I clicked on the link for existing customers and it didn't include the Starter Collection. When I enquired about this, I was told that this was for new customers only :confused:
