Wiring Setup - Smart TV, Set Top |Box & DVD Player

Hi,

I have recently bought a Samsung Smart TV and added it to my BT Set Top Box & Sony DVD Player.

I wired as follows:

Ethernet cable into BT box. Rooftop aerial cable into BT box, then daisy chain that RF cable into the Sony and then into the TV.
I connected the BT box to the TV with an HDMI and I also connected the Sony to the TV with an HDMI.

Is this correct? Do I need the RF running into the three boxes?
Do I need both the RF and HDMI cables? (If I do, why? Am I misunderstanding what signals are running through the HDMI).

Thanks for any advice.

Regards,
WMikeD

As no one has come back to you here goes .....Unless I am way off mark, and unless the DVD player is also a recorder, I can't see why it would need to be connected to your aerial by an RF cable.

I have never had a BT box so I am assuming that you have the wiring details supplied by BT but here's a link to the PDF if you need it.

An RV cable connection to your Smart TV is always handy in case your BT box dies as you can tune the TV in to Freeveiw etc .

You will need both of the HDMI cables to transfer the decoded signal from your BT box to your TV and when you use your DVD player.

The BT box pass throughs the RF signal to the tv so tvs freeview will work unless the BT dies suffers catastrophic failure (however the PDF mentions analogue which of course does not exist anymore)

As Jog says there is little point in connecting the dvd via RF unless its a recorder

I assume the BT box is a digital freeview box and only provides OD via the web? so it will need an Aerial plugged into it

Thanks guys.

I had thought that once the signals were delivered via the RF cable to the set top box (BT My Vision) the HDMIs would take over and I would not need an RF into the TV.

You don't actually need the RF cable to go to the TV but I tend to be a belt and braces type of person so would want to make sure my smart TV was set up ready in case the BT box died mid program. A quick change of source on the TV remote and you are up and running.

I know it worked for my when my VM signal died, having the RF cable already in place made the it easier. :)
