Battery capable of charging in 30 seconds

Pity they didn't mention its capacity.

A battery that can charge in under 30 seconds has been shown off at a technology conference in Tel Aviv.

Israeli start-up StoreDot displayed the device - made of biological structures - at Microsoft's Think Next Conference.

A Samsung S4 smartphone went from a dead battery to full power in 26 seconds in the demonstration.

There's a new open channel Lithium cell in testing. It charges just as fast.

So what's the actual capacity of the battery? It's not hard to charge a battery with 1% the capacity of the original in 1% of the time.

If you tried pumping the standard battery's 10 watt-hours into a Samsung S4 smatphone in 26 seconds regardless of the battery you would probably set it on fire.

Time has a little more detail.

Basically, the battery is a lower capacity than the standard battery, the charger is currently twice as expensive and huge and the battery needs a considerably higher current to charge than the standard, so the phone needs to be modified.

Still, they are targeting late 2016 for a launch, so they may be able to iron out those problems.

I'd sooner have a battery that lasts 30x longer personally...

Where something like that would sell is electric cars. Imagine being able to "fill" in minutes. Would still want a bigger range though.

Agreed range & refuel time are the two biggest issues with 'leccy cars

Ah, thanks. Yeah I was pretty sure phone modifications would be necessary but just how much was the curious part. Even half the capacity of the original phone battery (1.3 amp-hours) would require a current of over 150 amps to charge in that time, even assuming 100% efficiency.

Well if you can charge it to full in less than a minute, then you can practically recharge it several times a day... Helps as bit IMO.

The currents involved are frightening: If you were recharging a 200AH vehicle battery for example in an hour that takes 200+ amps, make it a minute and it's 12,000 amps! You'd struggle to lift the cable and just think of the size of the plug.:erm:

It's not that bad. These cables take 50,000 amps and aren't much thicker than a petrol hose.

But A) you already handle cables of that size every time you pick up a petrol hose, and B) cables required for 12,000 amps would be much smaller.

Yes it all helps, though if I'm at a place without a power point, I'd still prefer the longer life given the choice

12,000 amps at what voltage? Low voltage = thick cables, high voltage = thin cables. But then again: low voltage = thin insulation, high voltage = thick insulation.
