Looking for an alternative to Virgin
 

Hello

This is my first post here. I'm not very technical and please excuse me if this has been asked before. If it has, I haven't found the thread on the website ...

I have been a customer of Virgin since ntl days. I have TV XL V+ box, Broadband and landline. I'm well out of contract periods - so I won't have to pay a penalty if I move to another provider.

And move to another provider I certainly do want to do!

I have been getting increasingly frustrated by the useless VM Catch Up service and the attitude whenever I phone up to ask for something to be added. Failure to upload the 2nd part of The Great Train Robbery and the Mark Gattiss M.R. James Xmas specials was bad enough, but now they've failed to supply the final episode of Death in Paradise!

So enough is enough. BUT I can't have a satellite dish, because I live in an old house in a conservation area.

I pay a tad under £70 per month and I think I could do better. So I'd be very grateful for any recommendations and to hear your experiences.

I'm happy to keep the VM Broadband and phone services (provided they don't make me start a "new" contract, with all its restrictions.)

TV wise, I'm fond of Fox, Catch-up services (I rarely watch live), the occasional pay to view movie, and I listen to R.4Extra through the TV. It would be lovely to have Sky Atlantic - but I don't have that now and what you haven't had, you don't miss.

I don't have a Smart TV. It's a big TV, but quite old (all of five years or so!) and I can't afford to replace it.

Will a Now box work for me? Or a smart bluray player? Or is there anything else I should go with?

If you get a recordable box you don't have to rely on catchup

Now TV offer a cable for TVs without HDMI , they were out of stock but last update said they'd be getting more.

According to page it's NTSC only so may not work on UK TV's.

Good spot hadn't seen that , it says it will work with many tvs in the UK but not all , so its worth checking first.

I know that a mate of mine stuck his sky dish on a fence post in the garden to avoid having to go for planning. This might be an option
