Which are the best? I'm after Energizer Lithium Advanced/Ultimate strength but they aren't rechargeable :(

Most people that know about batteries are saying Sanyo Eneloop are the ones to go for, there are different versions of it, check the reviews.

Regulations now make the air transport of lithium batteries difficult, so sourcing from abroad is now a big problem. So we get ripped-off with UK prices now as they are often a monopoly.

NiMh is where the technology is improving quickly as SnoopZ said.

There are a lot of fakes out there though.

You can ship lithium batteries by air but you have to follow very strict regulations.

A friend ships unit that have lithium batteries, and he has to follow tight regulations.

keep an eye on hotukdeals, there are regularly deals posted there, with reputable ebay and amazon resellers doing good deals on Duracell procells, Sanyo eneloop etc.

8 x Panasinic AAA from the pound shop, ideal for remote controls, LED torches and wireless door bells. I use a single AA for my nose and ear trimmer, lasts ages.

"Good to go" is 7dayshop's own brand long shelf life / precharged NiMH
There are also Duracell duralock
Energizer ACCU Extreme
GP Ekopower (lower capacity) or Recyko

These days, pretty much every battery maker has a precharge / long storage model, and the big name Eneloops that were once the only entry in this field, are likely to be the expensive option.

PS. if the poundshop 8 are ZnCl, then the 6x Polaroid AAA alkaline from 99p Store have them beat every which way

Of course, there's also the 99p / pound shop rechargeables - very low in capacity - while stated to be NiMH, the capacities are more like NiCD - at 350mAH for the AAA - and while described as precharged ready to use, it's unclear if they really are:
