Usenet downloads throttled

Has there been a change in VM's usenet throttling of newsgroups recently as regardless of time of day it has gone from a constant 13.5MB down to 2MB on either ports 119, 443 or 563. Other speeds or browsing not affected.

I'm only getting 240k day or NIGHT for the past week. may be a highwinds problem or virgin routing.

I am on 20mbit - If this countinues then virgin will have to pay me 1millon a year if they want me to get 120mbit AND I AM NOT JOKING I am already thinking about dropping down to 10mbit or getting aol dial up.

I dont use the Virgin provided news groups i use supernews and get full speed at all times of the day via ssl on 443 so i agree it must be there groups that are affected

I use giganews and am having similar problems. My parents have just had VM installed and are having the same problems with giganews. The only time of the day i can get speeds anywhere near decent are between 4 and 5pm on a weekday

This is with Eweka and Giganews servers on VM one in Amsterdam and one in US both strangled by VM now.

Does anybody have any advice on how i can improve the download speeds from Giganews?

Seems pointless having super fast broadband if its going to go the speed of standard 30mb broadband

Yes dump vm and get sky, bt or bt fiber.

I'm also getting very poor speeds from virgin's news server, sometimes as low as a few kbps. Also the same with usenetserver too.
From what i understand virgin's and usenetserver are both highwinds resellers, so chances are that's where the fault lays.

This seems to happen every now and then, hopefully the issues will be resolved soon.

Still maxing out my 120mb on Tweaknews' servers (SSL connection) if I disable SSL it drops to an awesome 18Mbps!

That's what you get for being on the only major ISP left in the country still archaic enough to use either traffic shaping and throttling, let alone both.

No newsgroup problems here, but like others I don't use Virgin's.

I don`t know if this is part of the same issue but at for at least two weeks ive noticed as slow down at peak times this seems to affect traffic to and from Amsterdam the US and certain UK Based sites I reported this to virgin media but according to them there is no issues the only way i could retain a useable connection was to use a vpn.

A few days ago it seemed to "fix itself" at term i use loosely as virgin say they have done nothing but over the last couple of nights its been slowing down again this is not down to high utilisation in my area and this also effects speed test based outside of the virgin network but still in the UK.
