I'm getting BT Infinity broadband installed next week. I wanted to know should I have my the router installed upstairs or near the phone socket, as the BT sales agent said that if you use the computer/laptop upstairs and you're using a wireless connection, you could lose up to 5Mb internet speed, so he will send a 30M data extension kit.

your hub/router will need to be plugged into the master phone socket. are you installing this yourself or are they sending an MI engineer round?

An engineer is going to come down next week. I was told that I will be given a 30M data extension kit so I can have the router/hub installed upstairs, so I wouldn't lose internet speed if I mainly use the computer/laptop there.

Can someone please clarify what exactly is a data extension kit and what is it used for.

I think it's a long piece of ethernet cable. Cable clips may or may not be supplied. The idea is to allow you to install the BT Homehub closer to where you normally sit while you use the internets, so you have the strongest wireless signal for more of the time.

Virginmedia do/did the same kind of thing.

I've still got the 10m coax and a 20m ethernet cable in a box that my Superhub 1 self install came with
