Massive filesize wasted on NAS Drive

I have a 2TB WD MyBookLive.

I have a folder which has files which total 14GB, but take 52GB.

What the hell is going on, on my Laptop they take 15GB, so 38GB wasted and this is the one i have found

How to I correct this and what the hell is going on.

Does the drive actually have 2Tb? I was almost caught out by pendrives that were being sold as 16Gb, but actually were 8Gb, even though Windows reported them as being 16Gb.... the secret was compression software built into the pendrives.

So if you try to put 16Gb on compressed files onto the drive you would have no chance.

Well I hope its 2TB it said it on the box, and via the web access it says 2TB.

If the drive is formatted in an old/archaic file system and you didn't bother formatting it properly, it will be using a large cluster size and small files will waste a lot of space.

To get 2TB on FAT32 for example you would need to be using 32KB clusters, which means any file nomatter how small will use at least 32KB of space.

What's the cluster size and how many files are in the folder?

No idea, its the format out of the box for a WD MyBookLive.

The folder had about 50,000 files.

Well, sub-optimal cluster size is the only thing I can think of right now. Though with just 50,000 files it shouldn't be that big.
