Direct Debit problem with VM

Hi, having a problem with VM, i signed up about a year ago and used my mother in laws direct debit to make payments, i don't have direct debit and neither does my wife, the phone is not for me but for my wife. VM have now started to decline taking payments from the Direct Debit card, and we have no other way to pay for this, they said the only way they could accept the card again would be to speak to me and my mother in-law at the same time, i live in Belfast and she lives near London, so that isn't going to work, i thought this would be grounds for me to cancel the contract (i tired) but was told i would still have to pay the remaining 11 months.

What's the question?

Regardless, go and open a basic bank account and problem solved.

i have a standard savings account but it doesn't do direct debit, have tried to open an account with direct debit and have been denied, same as my wife, which is why we used my mother in-laws direct debit, it's what we used when we signed up for the phone, i don't understand how now they wont accept it lol

The bottom line is that you are using somebody else's credit history, not your own, which must be poor if you cannot open an account which allows direct debits.

You will just have to pay by bill via paypoint.

Isn't that fraudulent?

Can you mot enter the DD details online at your account?

If not you maybe able to get a second person (added to your account) who can enter your account over the phone, but not sure if they would be able to change the DD details.

The problem is that the entire corporate world fails entirely to understand that not everyone can have a bank account and yet they may still want to BUY a service.

...then you pay by another means, not by someone else's DD facility and bank account. There are reasons why some are not allowed certain bank accounts.

The only way you can get a contract phone with VM is if you have a DD account, my problem is why did they let me use my mother in-law's DD in the first place, and now take it away and cause this inconvenience to me.

I don't know the answer to that but I know that it must be to do with credit checking. They must have tightened up on this. Perhaps they should have refused you in the first place.

Have you tried with other banks? A basic bank account with direct debit and a debit card is something a lot of them will give you even if you are bankrupt, there's also the option as mentioned earlier of getting a prepaid card like Cashplus. There's really no excuse not to have at least direct debit in this day and age, no matter what the personal circumstances are.

Agreed - you can't really live your life economically without one:

Also - and I might be wrong here, but I think you can buy top up vouchers and apply them as credit against your bill on VM?
