How to replace BT master socket...correctly?!
 

Hello,

I recently moved into a new (but rather old) house and had the whole place rewired. The only thing that was left the same was the BT master socket. When I plugged my router in I received very slow broadband speeds at every phone point in the house (including the master socket). When I unscrewed the face plate of the master socket and plugged the router into the 'test socket' I got normal speeds again. Presumably this means that the master socket (or at least the connectors on the face plate) is past its best and needs replacing (either that or my electrician hasn't put it together very well.....). I noticed that there are only three or sometimes four connectors and I have six, with six wires connected. Do I only need to connect three wires for phone and broadband? If so, which ones?! I've attached a picture of what it looks like at the moment.

Looks more like you need a NTE5 ADSL Filter faceplate (if you can conveniently run the modem from there)

Or an I-plate (ring wire isolater) if you can't

It's the unbalance from the ring wire (which is not needed as microfilters provide their own ringer connection) that often degrades ADSL signal when extension wiring is connected.

Thanks for your help. Can I just clarify a bit:

I can't really run my modem from this room so it looks like I need the second option. Just to be clear, is the iplate different to the NTE5a like this?

That's what I assumed I needed as the connection speed is fine when connected to the test socket(?) Also, as you can see from the photo, I currently have six wires connected but everything I look at only has 3 or 4 connectors. Any thoughts on that? I've read what you said of course, can you tell me which of the 6 wires are needed?!

UPDATE:

I bought an iplate and tried that - no difference: if I plug directly into the test socket I get 5Mbps, if I put the face plate back on (with or without including the iplate) I get 0.4Mbps.

Anyone got any other ideas?

disconect all the internal extn wiring from the test plate. go wireless for voice/ wifi but if you need a hard wired connection for your adsl run an ethernet extn cable directly off the hub/modem to where you need it.
