Faulty Sky box?

Aged mother has a Sky HD box that refuses to boot up.
Is this a sign of an internal power failure just remains in standby mode.
(I know nothing about the workings of Sky equipment, just check/replace remote batteries)
HD box was a 'give me', so not under any guarantee.

Phone Sky and ask for an engineer, they will ask for. £60 call out charge; say you aren't going to pay that and threaten to leave, they'll do it for nothing

Can't they just link a used box to an existing card if she has a sub. Like Tiz said they're flogged dirt cheap.
