Have a call from this number requesting my date of birth before he would speak to me - about what I have no idea. Says he is from Virgin Media. Any ideas ?

The Virgin Media team never ring you and ask for details such as date of birth. If virgin media ring you then they would know who you are, and they would never ask for your details. even if you rang them they don't ask that type of question, they would only ask for the security passwords.

Never give your details out to anyone that phones you.

Incorrect.

They have and do, as do most companies. It's a standard security check. Even banks do it.

Or it's one of many call centres that are hired by several companies and don't feel the need to change their phone number every time they're paid to make a phone call.

It is definitely one of Orange/EE's "authorized partners" though:

This number called me today, before the landline had even stopped ringing the same number called on my mobile. Needless to say i never answered. ....

Its a Glasgow area code.

DOB is a standard identity question.

the McNicholas installation contractors for the south have a back office based out of Glasgow... they could possibly have needed to contact you regarding your install... to make sure its still going ahead or if there are going to be any issues... i.e. block paved driveway etc...

It's also inept because they're asking you for personal information without being in a position to assure you they have a legitimate reason to ask.

Several employees of a private investigations agency have just been found guilty of blagging, for phoning people up and extracting personal information by deception. This sort of thing can and does happen and is the reason I will never give any such information to any person who phones me, regardless of who they say they are.

Do what we do, say "one second" then put the phone down without hanging up and leave it for as long as they are there.

Or if you don't recognize the number, or it says private/withheld then don't answer, or if your phone allow disconnect the call.
