BBC to launch BBC One + 1, BBC Store and revamped i player
The BBC is planning to launch a BBC One +1 channel, its director general Tony Hall has announced. Speaking at his first major speech since joining in April, Lord Hall said audiences expected a timeshift service that would give people "more of what they've already paid for". BBC One "has to be the nation's favourite channel, and also its bravest," he added. He also announced a revamped iPlayer, offering a 30-day catch-up period.
The service will also allow users to personalise their viewing experience, as well as watch programmes before they are broadcast on TV. In addition, a BBC Store will be launched, offering people in the UK the chance to buy BBC shows to watch and keep. Lord Hall said he wanted BBC Music to be a well-recognised brand like BBC News and BBC Sport, and that he wanted to offer more moments like this year's Glastonbury festival coverage, where six stages were streamed live to TV, radio, computers, consoles, tablets and phones. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24442265 |

Seriously? There are plenty of channels that show almost nothing except repeats, yet they do just fine with a +1.
+1 and catchup address two different segments of the viewing public. It is a generational issue to a certain extent, with younger people more willing to dive in and use catch up services like iPlayer and older ones less willing to do something new. +1 addresses those that don't want to engage with the technology, and also those that don't like to watch tv on a computer and don't own a TV capable of displaying iPlayer. And there are a lot of those. The reason the BBC has not run any +1 channels until now is that they believed they had devised a comprehensive catchup solution with the iPlayer. The reason we are now going to get +1 from the BBC is that they have realised the iPlayer is never going to reach as far as they want it to. |

Although we do have to wait for BBC Trust approval before 30 day catch up is green lighted |

Yes the BBC One +1 channel I see as very beneficial for scheduling recordings in the busy evening period and like Old Boy, I tend to record whole series before watching them months later as we always have a backlog of favourite series and watch 2 or 3 of them concurrently at a time so other series wait; its my own personal "content on demand"!
For BBC series, you may also not actually get repeats while the main series is running so +1 helps you manage your recordings. Even if episodes are repeated, I assume that for a series link, Tivo still only searches for repeats (when clashes occur) on the same channel, so if it cannot record a programme on BBC1, it will look for repeats of that programme on BBC1 only and not look at the new +1 as a different channel number. Tivo has the capability to look across channels as that is how wish lists work, it is a shame they do not apply this software coding to series links as well, especially with plenty of +1 channnels in place so I can be even more lazy in planning my recordings! |
