mirror.virginmedia.com
I've been trying to use mirror.virginmedia.com (which is ex-telewest/blueyonder rather than ex-ntl I know). It has some useful mirrors of Linux distros, like gentoo.virginmedia.com and ubuntu.virginmedia.com
Anyway getting a very poor service... * DNS points to three IPs 194.117.143.69, 194.117.143.70, 194.117.143.71, 194.117.143.72 which correspond to hosts of mirror[1-4].mirrors.virginm.net. * It's clear that 194.117.143.70 is down. Not sure if it's terminal? Why don't they remove it from the DNS if it is? * Performance seems to be very poor, given that it's on their network. It's quicker using a host half way across the Internet and some and over a tunneled connection (using IPv6) Anyone know the status of this, maybe an insider? |
Re: mirror.virginmedia.com
I just tried it - it redirected me to http://mirrors.virginmedia.com/ and that works.
So did you miss off the "s"? Or did VM change it? edit' It did but now it's gone down again. i was in the middle of downloading Ubuntu from it. |

No just a typo above, otherwise I wouldn't have got the DNS names/IPs. Anyway was using ubuntu.virginmedia.com ;) Yeah it seems intermittment. One in four downloads fails as it's configured in a round robin, when I tested earlier there were two of four down. maybe they are being hammered? |
Re: mirror.virginmedia.com
i didn't even know they existed until 30 mins ago .. so maybe?

Re: mirror.virginmedia.com
you would have thought VM would inside more in that side of things and advertise it to try and keep traffic within their own network

Re: mirror.virginmedia.com
I'm guessing that, as popular as those applications/OS's are, they're probably quite niche in terms of how much bandwidth they actually take up on the network.
