Using Samsung galaxy s2 in America

I am going to America for holiday later on in year, and would like to take my phone. I will probably use my phone as a subscriber.

Can I buy a sim card in America so I can access mobile data?

America is not GSM although I have never been so dunno if that is relevant. You will need a tri band phone a quick google says

Used my S2 on T-mobile fine last year. It picked up a signal with my UK SIM straight away.

If you wanted a local SIM, assuming your phone is unlocked, then AT&T is certainly a GSM operator (others may be available)

If he has a 'proper' sat nav program.

Google maps / navigation for example will still download the maps for where it is while going down the road.

I'd download something like co-pilot before I left if I was going to do this.

I did this last year. I bought a T-Mobile prepaid sim before I went and topped up enough to cover a couple of weeks (after buying the sim, the cost was $2 a day for unlimited calls, texts & 2G/Edge data (the US uses different frequencies for 3G so few UK spec phones work for 3G data over there, but 3G data, if you have a good enough phone was an extra $1 a day).

It worked fine for what I used it for (mostly email, browsing and a few texts). Only bugbear was the amount of spam messages/calls (apparently the Americans are short on phone numbers so unused numbers get recycled quickly).

I got mine from SimCardGuru, but if you google 'USA SIM card' there are plenty of buying options (I'm told it can be a hassle getting hold of SIM's locally in the US - they aren't as freely available as they are over here).

America is GSM*

* Partly. But same could be said of the UK, we have several GSM networks and several non-GSM networks.

The Galaxy S2 supports all US GSM networks and most US 3G networks too.
