Moped advice please
 

Hi guys,

Just been through my CBT and I'm looking to buy a 125cc moped to get me to and from work. Can you offer any advice on where I should be looking to buy one? Would a highstreet dealer be best, or an internet seller etc?

Do any of you have any cautionary tales/horror stories to share?

If you want class buy a second hand Lambretta but they are expensive lol only joking they take a lot of work lol

I am glad you are going for a 125 at least you will have enough power ( my old school brain is telling me its a scooter if its over 50cc and oringinally actually had pedals but I dunno how they class things now) to get out of the way

If you buy new you will pay new prices if you go for a relatively new one you will save a small fortune. Do you want manual gears or automatic? again I aint kept up but I assume both are available. What did you take your CBT on

this is an auto as you see a fraction of the cost of a vespa but without the class lol

Have you considered an electric bike? They are very common around here now.

I now know the difference between mopeds and scooters. A moped is 50cc or under and above that, it's a scooter. So, it's a scooter I'm after. I trained on a 50cc automatic Honda and actually loved it. Definitely want a 125 though.

I'm afraid I'm not into the Vespa culture, something cheaper and more basic will suit me fine, preferably automatic.

As far as an electric bike goes, there may be a ruddy great hill to climb to my company's new place and I don't think an electric bike would be suitable, but I'd not even considered that so I may do a little research. Thanks.

it a suzuki 125 in a yamaha frame -it was £ 1200 new it work fine and parts are cheap and readily available.

it does 120 mpg top speed is 70-75 mph

I would back up what papa smurf says about the Lexmoto, they have been gaining a good reputation.

I would be tempted to look at the Sym range, they are are made in Taiwan and are gaining a very good reputation, a work colleagues son had the XS125 which is very similar to the Lexmoto.

ps. Lexmoto have the Gladiator scooter, it's cheap but I'm not sure of the quality.

Although if you are set on a scooter I would be tempted to look at the Sym Symphony and Symphony SR as they have decent size wheels. (They also have a couple of 125's with traditional small scooter wheels) Sym are a bit more expensive than Lexmoto, made in Taiwan and are gaining a very good reputation.

If it wasn't for the distance to my partners house, I would be tempted by the XS125 for commuting to work.

ps. Lexmoto have the Gladiatorbut I'm not sure about the quality.

I take it you want a scooter (mopeds are less than 50cc)

Most recommend something like a Peugeot speedflight (100cc) as they are reliable, quick and easy to maintain, we even have a peugeot 50cc trekker here for short journeys that we can't be bothered getting out the big bikes/cars/van.

Avoid the taiwan/chinese crap as they break down due to cheaply made components and there's no guarantee that parts will be available 5+ years down the line.

Not old enough to remember the golden years of British bikes... but have been riding now for nearly 30 years and the only bikes I currently avoid are the Chinese models purely due to their current reputation. To many horror stories in the biking communities concerning failed oil pumps, purely built frames and faulty brakes on various models. Perhaps in 10 years time they might get their act together but until then stick to European or Japanese.
