Wireless coverage problem in one room
 

I have a SH1 located in an upstairs which is were my desktop computer is situated, I am having poor wireless coverage in just one down stairs room.

I know the cause which is copper water storage tank in the way so setting the SH in modem mode and getting a better wireless router will not solve the problem.

The wireless signal in the lounge is strong but not in the other down stairs room.

In my lounge there is a VM TV outlet for the VM TiVo.

My question is can I add a splitter onto the VM outlet to the VM outlet in the lounge with a splitter http://www.maplin.co.uk/2-way-f-splitter-29530 model Product Code: QQ69A and connect my SH to it?

To be honest, your issue could probably be fixed by buying a decent router and ditching the SH1's wireless completely. It's very poor.

I know you think that the copper is the issue, but you're underestimating how bad the SH1's wireless really is.

If the SH is located at one end of the property you might consider using a simple reflector a tad bigger than the SH and a few centimetres away (kitchen foil glued to or just folded around cardboard). As the problem is downstairs you'd need to angle it downwards. I'd certainly explore simple solutions before making major changes to the installation and/or spending much money. That said I gave up on my SH and use it in modem mode alongside a router.

If you do decide to go for a splitter and move your hub a cheapy off ebay would save a few coppers.

The short answer is yes. You're close to the green cabinet so the 4 dB loss of adding a splitter shouldn't be noticed.

But then will be moving your PC downstairs? How do propose connecting to that? Or have I misunderstood you in some way?

I have Ethernet cable from the lounge to the up stairs room were my desktop is so no connection problem on that score.

I have computer in the lounge connected by wireless and I get full strength signal.

I have now purchased a tablet which needs wireless which is why I asked was by adding a splitter may cause problems on the VM side of the network.

I have one of the splitters I mention so I will try it.

It should work, Ken. I moved the SH from one room to my office and split the Tivo feed without problem (except that VM had to renew the wiring round the outside of my house to the office!).

Our Superhub 1 was downstairs and we had a similar problem with unusable WIFI for a tablet in a bedroom diagonally upstairs, but the wifi in the room immediately above the hub was always fine. Bought a Huawei WS320 WIFI repeater (£23) and plugged into the wall socket in the room with poor wifi. The tablet automatically switched to the signal from the repeater when I walked into this room, but only the first time. When I walked downstairs and then back again it did not switch back to the signal from the repeater. I had to go back downstairs and restart the tablet (it then used the stronger signal from the router) and walk back upstairs again, OR turn the repeater off an back on (took 1-2 minutes) in the bedroom. Don't think a tablet should behave like that.

The signal from the repeater was fine when picked up by the tablet and when the tablet remained in the bedroom. I don't know if a laptop would misbehave in the same way or if the signal from a Superhub 2 would reach the bedroom without a repeater. We have a Superhub 2 now, but I got fed up and returned the tablet so cannot repeat the experiment.

My iPAD does what you'v described. I'm convinced that is because it has a strong enough signal and doesn't need to switch to upstairs.

Then there is the debate about what "strong enough" means. In my case the 2 bar signal upstair from the downstairs router still delivered Sky Go properly - no better than the full signal from the upstairs wireless router.

Sometimes I just feel, irrationally, that I should have full signal; it takes about 5 seconds via the Settings menu to do that on the iPad - a brilliant Sky Goor TV catchup device.

I have moved the SH to the lounge and connected it via a slitter to the VM TV outlet with one leg of the splitter to my Tivo and the other to the SH.

I now get a very strong wireless in all rooms at no extra cost all already had a splitter.:hyper:

Now that I have moved the SH2 into the lounge at the rear of my house I made a experiment I logged onto Skype and made Skype call and my SH2 is in the rear of the house I walk out to the road in front (some 30 yards and through 2 brick walls) and I able still to carry on with the Skype call.

Yeah - Ken. When I was trialling the SH2, I went to the end of my long drive and still got iPad signal (I don't use Skype). The SH2 is a reasonable wifi bet. Of course I'm in modem mode now because the rest of the SH2 router functions are lame!
