Different Router with Sky Hub?
I know this has probably been asked plenty of times, but I am still a little unsure. I have the new Sky Hub which dosen't allow a host of things including VPN and a choice of Dynamic DNS.
I would like to use my own Netgear router, which I know is against terms and condidtions, that said I would obviously plug it back in if any problems should arise. I have extraced my username and password with wireshark, and the Sky hub uses PPPoA. Any advise would be great. |
Re: Different Router with Sky Hub?
I used an alternative router ages ago, to be able to have Wireless "N" back when Sky's router was still ye olde Netgear DG834GT. This was back before the change from PPPoA to MER though (are you definitely still using PPPoA?). I just put my ADSL connection info into the non-Sky router and away I went...
Tbh, you may be better off asking somewhere dedicated to Sky. You could try the forums at Sky User. |
Re: Different Router with Sky Hub?
Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's definately PPPoA, but I believe the Fibre Optic is MER. I have looked around and it seems the Billion 7800 Router supports both PPPoA and MER. I have too looked at the Sky Forums and there also seems to be a lot of conflicting advice on this subject. Some people seem to be saying that if the ip address changes you get thrown off, which is the bit I can't seem to get my head round.

I never had that problem.

Re: Different Router with Sky Hub?
If you are on MER (VDSL) you will have to install DD-WRT and get your skyUN/PW by sniffing the sr-101 using wireshark. Then it is just a matter of entering your sky credentials into the new routers appropriate section, in the appropriate form ie sometimes has to be in binary.
If you are on PPPoA (adsl) ypu wi;ll still have to sniff your UN/PW but you may be able to just enter them into the router using its standard firmware. As suggested by Matt D if you patiently trawl the forums at sky user all will be revealed. If all that is too complex then it is possible to connect a new router to the sr-101 DMZ (as per guide found on sky user) This is a simpler solution that suffices for many users of whom I am one. |
