BBC Sports Channel

I have mentioned this in passing before, but I winder if the BBC have any plans to start a sports channel.

Not for Premiership football etc, but for other sports that don't get much exposure on other channels.

Yesterday, I spent a fair amount of time watching the athletics live on Eurosport whilst the BBC spent their time showing songs of praise.

Other sports I was thinking about ... cross country athletics, judo, fencing ... you get the idea.

Appreciate it would cost to start up, but then at least they would not have to keep switching programs from channel to channel at Wimbledon time!

When was it stopped for songs of praise? I went straight to the athletics from the Charity Shield and I watched until the end - I thought the BBC did a good job, in fairness, although some of the interviews were a bit awkward. I have high hopes that when all their channels are available in hd we'll see a whole channel, perhaps BBC 3 or 4, given over for the duration of sporting events - the constant flicking between one and 2 for the likes of Wimbledon is just annoying.

The athletics was on all day live (on Eurosport) - yet the BBC only showed it in between programs.

Eurosport showed constant live events, the BBC spent most of their time interviewing each other !

Ah OK - I'd missed the morning session anyway. I found the Seb Coe interview fascinating, and since they are the national broadcaster I thought they did a good job of advertising the sport and show casing British athletes. Like I say, however, there has now got to be the flexibility to give an entire channel over.

Out of interest why do you think people who prefer non sports programming on those other channels should give those shows up for sports?

Personally l don't think so and perhaps in the short to medium term BBC could run a sports channel during the day using the hours when their BBC 3 and BBC 4 channels are not in use.

They do it when it is justified, that is what the red button is for and why the Olympics had such great coverage. Our athletics team had the majority of the real medal contenders pull or or they were not on form / fit enough. There will never be a BBC 24/7 sports channel as it would need a major season long sport and they will never get the budget to do so, which is the reason why they lost a lot of Formula One......

I didn't say that. However, during Wimbledon, for example, the BBC will, across several channels, show all day coverage. Wouldn't it be better for everyone, sport fans and non sport fans, if that coverage was confined to one channel rather than constantly switching?

I think the BBC could resolve this simply by shunting all it's essential programming onto their other channel when they have a big event like Wimbledon.

It is ridiculous to expect people to keep changing channels to retain coverage and it makes a huge mess of your recordings.
