Cruising with a mobile

I am shortly going on a cruise and taking my mobile just to listen to music. To avoid any horrendous internet costs , can I just put my phone in Flight Mode or do I have to change any other settings please?

Flight mode would do it, but that would also stop you from connecting to a Wifi network where available. Assuming an Android phone: go to settings -wireless & networks. Then toggle Mobile Network off.

Alternatively: switch data roaming off. This will stop you connecting to the web when abroad, but not when in the UK.

Just checked and on both Android & iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod) you can turn Airplane Mode on and then turn WiFi back on

No it wouldn't.

Most phones allow you to turn on wifi in flight mode.

Also on Nokia S60 and most phone-equipped laptops.

Having just been faced with charges for texts I ddn't make while overseas, if I removed my SIM card whilst overseas, would I still be able to use my Android phone for playing games and listening to my music collection?

Can't say for sure about Android phones, but in my experience, most smartphones can do other stuff without a sim, they just can't phone or send or receive messages.

Yes.

If you have an UMA app you will also be able to make and receive calls and texts.
