CGN its started :(

reports from BT care forums a few users have silently been put on CGN.

Carrier Grade Nat

Basically isp sharing ip between 2 or more customers.

From my point of view it seems there needs to be enforcement for better management of ip's and to enforce ipv6 rollout prior to CGN.

The longer ipv6 is out of the mass market the longer it will take for widespread adoption, it seems noone wants to go first and to cap it off the isps in this country appear very short sighted.

I suspect there is £ signs ringing with CGN as well as a isp could make CGN their standard and then charge extra for basic dynamic address's and extra on top of that for static.

If the NAT equipment was IPv6 ready, which I would expect any new equipment being added should be, could it not be a first step towards IPv6?

Not sure of exactly how their high end CGN works but if it was IPv6 ready and could NAT that and IPv4 customers, they could theoretically start sending out IPv6 CPE to new customers. Then upgrade the parts of the network beyond the NAT at a later stage as it could forward route both types of customers as IPv4 for now.

Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge of CGN in this environment could confirm if this is possible and if that kind of strategy would actually be useful or not.

I think you asking about dual stack.

ipv4 and ipv6 can work together yes. Thats the logical way forward. Until there is masses of broadband users ipv6 enabled the amount of ipv6 sites in existance will be small.

After checking i was on the CG-NAT, so I've had to opt out as i have two xboxes online, some times at the same time, and no doubt this would of caused me all sorts of problems.

Nat can be a hassle at the best of times even with only a few devices.

BT have confirmed IPV6 is also coming during 2013 so finally a major isp has put a date on IPV6. Also CGN can be opted out of.

Brilliant news!

Even with the opt out, CGN looks like a support nightmare as well as inconveniencing customers who will have no idea why some of their stuff stops working properly.

The son of the snoopers charter looks like it might force an ipv6 roll-out as a by-product of the misguided attempt to make everyone have their own unique IP address.
