Dead customer Virgin Media bill goes viral on Facebook

A broadband bill sent to a deceased man, which included a fine for late payment, has been shared more than 53,000 times by Facebook users.

Social media experts say it is a reminder of the importance of responding quickly and publicly to complaints made on social networks.

The man's son-in-law, Jim Boyden, posted a photograph of the bill, along with a message addressed to Virgin Media, on the social media network.

I have to agree that this is a awful incident that should never of happened. I hope VM find out why this happened and makes sure it can NEVER happen again.

A year or two ago someone was on Watchdog with the same problem along with a few others expressing it had happened to them too. So if they have not stopped it happening in all that time, I don't expect they will any time soon.

Just providing the facts ;)

I would have to be careful not to damage you too badly with the pitchfork...your next of kin could possibly get one of these letters too

To some extent all companies will have some issues with recent deaths, its just how they deal with this once advised by their family.

Qtx just wanted to use it as a way to bash Virgin.

Using a distressing situation to try to score some points against an organisation he seems to hate? Doesn't seem right to me.

How about we don't move away from the topic and start baiting each other.

End of the day it happened and i hope it never happens again. It has been pointed out that we are not the only company that has made this mistake and i am sure we will not be the last.

When I was sorting out my fathers affairs, HMRC did something similar. I didn't feel the need to post it on FB - just gave them a call and it was sorted there and then, along with what I considered was a sincere apology. Most large organisations have special teams to deal with bereavements, and from my own experience most get it right (including VM by the way). I'm sure if I could be bothered to dig around I could find examples of the beloved Sky cocking up the odd account or two.

Cheers

Grim

Thing is though not every company makes this particular mistake, how come others can handle this sensitively and properly and others can't, hoping it doesn't happen again isn't good enough imo.
