Faxing on a Broadband Line
 

Hello.
I recently bought an Epson 3520 all in one.
I've connected it up and everything works but my problem is this:

Any time I am sending/receiving a fax my broadband temporarily cuts off until the fax releases the line. The printer recognises the connection and says it is ok but it doesn't recognise broadband on the line.

There are two connections at the back of the printer - TEL & EXT.

This is my set up;

One filter is connected to the telephone socket.
Connected to the filter is my telephone, and a connection from the filter to TEL on the printer/fax.
I have another telephone cable running from the EXT to the back of the router.

I have tried changing the TEL/EXT around but I still have the same problem.

Is this wired up incorrectly or do I need something other connection/wire?

It was suggested by Currys/PC World to remove the EXT connection but when I do this I lose broadband (obviously because there is no DSL connection).

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Broadband side of ADSL filter must only be connected to the Broadband equipment i.e. modem (or ADSL router).
Telephone side of filter must only be connected to a phone, fax.

All phones / fax / modem, must plug into a filtered part of your telecoms wired master stocket or extension.

Thanks for that, im fairly new to all of this and not sure what you mean.
Everything is working ok but its just the broadband is interrupted when the fax is in use.

On the filter (Line) is connected to my telephone, and (dsl) goes to TEL in the back of my fax.
And the EXT of the fax goes to the back of the router.

If I connect the filter (dsl) to the router then I have nowhere to connect my fax.

DSL cannot connect to a phone / fax line. It can only connect to an ADSL modem / router.

You will need to get a phone point doubler to connect the phone and fax to the line side of the filter.

You should plug your house phone into the fax's EXT port and the fax's TEL port connected to the LINE side of your filter. The fax's EXT port is most likely offering you an alternative to buying a separate splitter.

Connect your modem router directly to the DSL side of the filter.

Thanks Chris. I cannot plug the house phone into the EXT port because it is the wrong connection, this image here says I should do that but I cant...

EXT & TEL on the printer are RJ11 so I cannot connect it there.

Get a cable with the right connectors then. £1 off eBay, or make your own if you're so equipped.

Then as qasdfdsaq has said, go on eBay or your own favourite online retailer and buy the right cable, or an adapter.

Yep, Poundland often has a good selection of phone bits, at the back, on the left, near the crisps.

Justin, your problem, basically, is that you had the instructions in front of you, but decided to ignore them because you didn't have the right wire. You invented a completely different way of wiring everything together and it didn't work. The only strange thing here is why you didn't make the connection yourself between not following the instructions, and things not working properly ...

Hi Chris, yeah you are right, what am I looking for in the shops then?
Im not sure what connection connects where?
Do I use the EXT on the printer?
Where does the TEL from the printer connection go?
Does the router DSL cable still go directly to the router?

Am I right in say that the connection should be this?

Router DSL to filter
Telephone to filter
Printer TEL to filter
No connection to the EXT

and to do this I need phone point doubler for all these filter connections?

Appreciate all your help.

If you don't want to buy the appropriate cable to connect your phone to the EXT socket on the fax machine, then you need to buy a socket doubler to allow you to connect both your phone and your fax to the LINE input on your filter. The only thing that should ever be connected to the DSL input on your filter is your ADSL broadband modem/router, and your ADSL modem/router should always and only be connected to the DSL input of a filter.

Google "telephone socket splitter" and take your pick.
