I doubt the Chinese will back them this time they like the western money to much. Will give Obama a chance for a real war with a valid reason to kick ass something old Bush didn't have

More likely the Chinese will apply pressure to NK by restricting food and supplies as they're the only route for this regime to get resources.

Mind you if the NKs are mad enough to take a pot shot at the USA or say Japan with a nuke then all bets are off.

China at a push would deal with North Korea itself I imagine. They're not to jeopardise relations with USA over North Korea, they only tolerate them precisely because they're a buffer from South Korea and American forces as you say.

Either way North Korea won't provoke a large war but they could do a bit of damage to South Korea/Japan. If they did however they won't have any allies and will find themselves finished pretty quickly I imagine.
