Moving a wi-fi router
Simple question I hope. My cable modem is upstairs and our router is attached to it using a 1.5m lead which was supplied with the router. I'd like to move the router to the adjoining room to try to improve the household coverage and am wondering if I can just use a longer cable? I already have a 10m? long grey ethernet cable running into that room (through a small hole in the wall) which I used to use for connecting our old non wi-fi pc direct to the cable modem. That's no longer required so could I use this same cable to connect between the router and the modem or is a different type required? Also, is there a maximum suitable length for a cable which is being used for this purpose?
Hope that's clear. TVM as always. |

That should do the job fine, can't hurt to try it out!

Re: Moving a wi-fi router
Ethernet leads should be good for up to 100m

Re: Moving a wi-fi router
OK thanks guys, if it can't do any harm I'll give it a try and move the router. Will report back later, if I still have internet access that is... :erm: ;)

Re: Moving a wi-fi router
We use a 30m lead between router in front room and router in study. Second router acts as a wireless access point.
So your setup sounds fine. |
