Own router on Talk Talk fibre
Hi guys,
We are shortly due to move and unfortunately won't be in a Virgin area. Thankfully I live in a BT fibre area. It seems my choices for fibre are BT, Sky, Talk Talk and Plus Net. I am looking more towards Talk Talk because of their TV service. Does anyone know if I can replace the supplied modem router with my own? My experiences of ISP kit has never been positive. I presume it is all VDSL? |
Re: Own router on Talk Talk fibre
Any router that supports PPPoE should work. Don't link a crap router.

Excellent, thank you for the replies!
Because the master socket is right by the front door, an all in one unit is my preference. I can mount this high up the wall so it is out of the way. I was looking at Sky as well, but for a lesser package than I currently pay with VM costs a lot more. Talk Talk Fibre and YouView seems to be the way forward for us. I also notice Sky don't allow the use of anything but their own router. I have emailed cablemystreet@virginmedia.co.uk. My new hosue is a new build Barratt Home and is on a street that is cabled although Barratt never saw the sense to get VM in to do the new build. Our neighbours outside the development can get VM. It's a long shot but worth an email! |

Re: Own router on Talk Talk fibre
I have heard of people who, for some reason, have moved from talk talk, wishing to keep using their talk talk supplied router instead of the offering from sky.
It might be worth giving the talktalk router a try before ditching it. |
Re: Own router on Talk Talk fibre
Sky don't make it easy for you to use your own router but do not prevent it outright.

Re: Own router on Talk Talk fibre
Sky's fibre broadband is expensive anyway. For the Sky Unlimited Pro it's £30 a month with £14.50 line rental on top of that. Plus a new line install charge of £15. Talk Talk is £27.75 for the first 12 months then £31 thereafter including line rental (with their line rental saver) and no connection charges.
Looks like I will go for Sky's entertainment extra package with HD at £36.75 a month with Talk Talk internet. I'll try and haggle the 2tb box in for nothing. |
