Wireless Router advice

I might need new wireless router as my current one is starting to play up and generally be annoying.

I need a high performance one. I like to stream video of my NAS and I use Xbox Live, additionally these devices are quite far away from the router's location. So I need one with the longest and fastest range. Especially one that will help improve the ping speeds for those devices that are far away. Is this something I can achieve with a decent router and what should I be looking for?

Much appreciated.

I get excellent service from an ASUS router. My n16 is old now so look for rt-n66 or rt-n56.

What good about it?

Re: Wireless Router advice

I bought the RT-N66U after the wireless on my Super hub seemed to give up, I was constantly lagging on Xbox live, one minute I would have a full signal the next it has deteriorated to no signal causing disconnects etc.

Since having the Asus RT-N66U it seems to have cured the problem. I have an excellent signal all over the house and Xbox live is a lot better with no disconnects at all. My ping seems to have improved when doing speed tests as well, not sure if this is due to the router or because of Virgin Media. On the shub I usually had a ping of around 20-22ms, Now it seems to stay around 15ms to 17ms.

I haven't had much time to test it with streaming video, however the small clips I have played haven't really taken long to buffer.

Well personally I can only attest to the rt-n16.

I run tomatousb and can only say it just works superbly in all respects. I really cannot fault it.

If I was to replace it I would go for the n56 or n66 without a doubt but as I am not fussed about simutaneous 5meg and being a firm believer in "if it ain't broke" philosophy I will keep my n16 running for as long as possible. :)

I'm running the RT-N56U with custom firmware. Smashing bit of kit. Can max out our 100Mb connection all over the house and garden.

Cheers

This is my router and I'm not sorry that I spent £150 on it.

Pretty much as far as I know, but it does the job for me. I keep checking out the official and beta's from ASUS but some how just keep going back to the custom one.

no not entirely. SH modem mode > Asus router. the Asus has by far a better build qaulity and equally better firmware router side. youll get better results from your connection with better equipment.
