US wants Britain inside the EU

Quote:

The Obama administration has publicly expressed concern about the impact of a UK referendum on its future relationship with the EU.

Philip Gordon, a senior official in the US State Department, said it was in America's interests to see a "strong British voice within the EU".

I'm sure there'll be plenty who'll say keep your noses out of our business but I don't suppose even they'll demand he be deported. :)

As I said in another thread, part of the discussion about the EU will have to focus on the benefits we gain from it. The dialogue as been far too one sided on the issue.

If leaving the EU hacks off the Americans surely that is a win/win situation. :)

Philip Gordon can go and whistle.

Isn't it funny how the American love affair with democracy comes to an abrupt halt when it perceives its national interest overseas is at risk.

Cameron is going to make it clear soon what is going to happen. He says he wants to make a new deal with the EU but commentators have said that this may be difficult to achieve, maybe some token concessions will be granted. I don't see Cameron offering an option to flat out leave the EU however so the Americans need not be too concerned just yet, although that leaves open the question of what we'll actually have a referendum on.

Would have to be a hell of a lot sweeter than that. I would want Obama to pay our subs and publicly bend over and lick the Queens corgis backsides one after the other

Maybe we should have a referendum on whether we want more of the 'special relationship'.

Now if only the UK would put its self first ( Stop giving money away to the rest of the world, would be a start in what ever form it takes ):erm:

Cameron needs to hold a referendum on this.

A referendum about just how far we should bend over to allow the Yanks to kiss our rear end regarding what it is they want.

Referendums are a complete waste of time. Politicians will only hold them if they're guaranteed to win. However I suspect the question won't be as simplistic as 'in' or 'out'; but will give the govt. leeway not to change anything, except hopefully boost their popularity and say 'we tried to negotiate a new deal as instructed but couldn't'.

Regardless of the result all this uncertainty is going to hurt the country badly for years as companies choose to invest elsewhere. All for the political gain.

The rest of Europe care less than we think if we're in or out, we're increasingly insignificant.

I would prefer a referendum on the EU and how much more of our laws, history, and individuality we give them control off. At the moment we bend over and take one every day from a bunch of unelected money wasting bureaucrats in brussels.

Because they have everyday control of this country anyway.

I was kind of assuming people would take the context in which I meant the referendum in line with the second part of my post... :erm:
