Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!
Ive been on 10mb for a few years now and never had any trouble, but a couple of weeks ago i was givena free upgrade to 20mb and thats where my problems started.
I mostly use my internet with PS3 and before i could watch iplayer etc no probs but now i get constant buffering and it will rarely work also the PS3 speedtest was always right before showing 10mb or 2.5mb if traffic management had kicked in. Now i see speeds all over the place ranging from 1mb to 18mb, the PS3 speedtest seems to be telling the truth because when its low iplayer etc wont work and when its high iplayer works fine. So it seems my internet is no longer stable i am still using the same hub that i had before but i notice thast im now on docsis 2 and im sure i was on docsis 1 before. So could it be that docsis 2 has too many users in my area and thats slowing me down? Also does docsis 1 only support up to 10mb? If it does i would rather go back to docsis 1 and 10mb than put up with this, will virgin downgrade me again? Thanks for any help. |
Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!
you said you're having trouble with buffering.
See this thread: http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...3/td-p/1582824 This is part 3 as the other threads became too long. There are links to the other 2 threads in the first post. |

I recon tiny T is on an ambit 255/256 modem.

I'm not sure but I think anything up to 20Mbps is on the DOCSIS 1.1 network? I didn't think VM used DOCSIS 2.

The 256 modem can handle 20 Mbit. My speed has been doubled to 20Mbit, I have the 256 modem and I get 20 Mbit solid. |
Re: Just been upgraded from 10mb to 20mb, but know my internet is slower!
20mbit is on docsis 2 and the ambit 256 can handle 20mbit no probs. What will be interesting is if the op hasnt got an ambit 256 and is using an older modem which is only good for 10mbit such as the terayon tj210.
Anyways, the chances are that there were too many users on 10mbit which have now been banged up to 20mbit and there isnt enough juice to go around. There were talks many years ago about moving 20mbit users onto docsis 3 so I don't know if you can ring up to get a shub and if you use that you'll be on 20mbit on docsis 3. |

Downstream was DOCSIS 1.1; upstream was DOCSIS 1.0. It tells you on the upstream stats "Channel Type". |

Your current upstream type, Ken, is on the power levels page.

Your upstream is on DOCSIS 2. This is ascertained from your upstream symbol rate (5120K), which is the rate at which the 6.4MHz channel operates and is only supported on DOCSIS 2. BTW, is your upstream power steady at 47 dBmv? Or does it rise/fluctuate? I've noticed that your upstream modulation is QPSK, which means there's noise on your upstream which isn't good. |

i noticed that as well but to be fair on the few occasions I have been on it (not happened in aaaaaaaaages) i didnt suffer performance wise
