Best way to extend wifi to 'dead' area of house
 

Hi,
I have just upgraded to 30Mb Superhub and like others, found the wifi to woefully inadequate.
I have installed a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND router with SH in modem mode and whilst I now get 30Mb in wifi close by, there is a room at the back of the house that I need service but cannot get any.
I tried homeplugs etc but it is on a different ring main and did not work.

I guess I could run a cable from the router down to the room and stick some sort of device (access point??) on the end, but not sure of this.

Can anyone recommend a product which would work in this scenario please?

My setup is similar to yours but my router is TL WR 841N

Have you tried switching channels on your router, I do not understand why, but in my house, channel 1 works best, some channels like 6 do not work at all. It also pays to use a wifi detector such as Inssider to see if your neighbours wifi are interfering with yours esp in the dead area.

Hi and yes, I have.
I did a scan and tried all channels that were not being used locally.
Settled on 11 for now.

I am thinking something like this might work.

Anyone know?

May be worth trying again, if you still have them. Different rings in the same house shouldn't (normally) present a problem...

Did they work when plugged into the same ring?

I think the only way you are going to do it dude is if you run a cable round to another room (not neccessarily the one you need the wi-fi in) and setup another access point. You can hide the cable in a number of ways.

Pretty much any wireless router can be used as a second access point. The DIR-615 being a case in point and very good value for money off Ebay.

In fact, the Superhub comes with one unless you had a manned installation and the tech nicked it :D

ok, thanks a lot, I shall run a cable down there and set up an access point.

If I use a router as an access point, will I create a different network or is it an extension of the same one?

Depends which port on the router you plug the cable into.

I would set the second router to a manually excluded IP, turn off the DHCP server on it, and plug the cable into the LAN port. Then your devices can seamlessly move between the two as if the same network.

and you can ser the same SSID but with a different channel (e.g 6 and 11)
