SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
I recently replaced my old ntl modem/Netgear router WGR614v7 for a SuperHub in case that was the reason that my new Toshiba 32RL953 TV did not recognise the router AP.
When I am in the TVs manual wireless setup, the TV says "No APs found", the same with auto setup. Nor does it see any MAC address in the list of those available. I fitted the TV with the special Toshiba wireless dongle as that is the only one that works on the Toshiba TV. I then made the SHub modem only and installed a TP Link WR1042ND as a secondary router (which one of you gave help over past 2 days). Still the TV says "No APs found". The TP router is set to broadcast its SSID. Nor can I see the TV's MAC address on the TP router's list of connected MAC addresses or those available in the TP router's ARP list of MAC addresses. I have gone over all the details in the Toshiba instructions, all is correct. There is nothing I can find via Google for this problem. Please can someone help. Rgds Jonathan |
Re: SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
I know nothing aboutToshiba TV's but recently I have connected a sky+HD to my LAN. I connected via ethernet because 1.) I already had a superlong ethernet cable that was doing nothing and 2.) a wireless connection requires using a wireless bridge available from Sky at £9.99.
Maybe you require a wireless bridge to connect? Some routers can be configured to act as a wireless bridge. What about an ethernet connection, always better than wireless. |
Re: SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
Thanks for your quick reply Mick, yes cable IS best and its does have a LAN socket and I do have a 100m roll of ethernet cable, but, as the router and TV are at opposite corners of a large room with fireplace and wide patio door in the way, trying to avoid running a cable.
The Toshiba dongle cost near £30, so, would prefer to have use of the money paid. In working with many bits of gear connected to the wireless side of the Virgin cable broadband, using a bridge has not cropped up. I will look into it. I have posted a query into the Virgin Forums. Rgds Jonathan |
Re: SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
The need to use a wireless bridge has nothing to do with the superhub.
A wireless bridge is a device intended to give wireless capability to a device that doesn't have the capability built in. Perhaps your "Toshiba Dongle" is a wireless bridge. |

Conclusion - There's something wrong with your TV/dongle combo or you haven't set it up correctly... You won't see the MACs listed until you've established a connection to the router wireless SSID. If automatic setup* doesn't work, have you entered the SSID manually correctly? See step 5 of manual setup on page 33 here. Perhaps the software has changed, but there doesn't seem to be a scan for network feature so you need to enter the SSID. *You have pressed the WPS button on the routers you've tried? http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...MER_TYPE=Cable |

Lucky I said "perhaps" :) |
Re: SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
Well perhaps it still is, and the reason it doesn't work is cause it's not supported by the Superhub :-P
(Except his old router didn't either) |

Re: SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
Thanks for your comments and the debate :). As for the SHub, I put that back to being modem only as even with its upgraded firmware, it is still a very average wireless router with poor capability even at distances inside a large room.
So, the TV is looking at/for the SSID for the new TP-Link WR1042ND router I connected from the SHub. There have been no responses to my query in the Toshiba Help Forums. As everything else can see the SSID, possibly the TV is faulty, I bought it from Comet 1 week before its liquidation . Although they will honour their responsibility for repairs, it won't be quick. Or maybe there is some quirky setting they assume people know what to do and so do not mention it in the instructions - as often happens. Rgds Jonathan ---------- Post added at 23:38 ---------- Previous post was at 23:30 ---------- Sorry, I did not notice the reply from Ferrtuk when I replied above. Yes, I did press the WPS button and the WPS light is on. Thanks for the link to the Toshiba manual, far more detailed than the one I was provided. I will go through that and revert back with what happens. Regards Jonathan |

To support more than one device (i.e. work as an actual bridge rather than, basically, a media-converter) you need either proprietary WDS or 4-address mode. Without it, the wireless client strips the source MAC addresses from the ethernet frame so data coming back over the bridge doesn't know where to go. |
Re: SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
Thanks for further comments, although I am becoming a little lost in the side debate over the bridge issue and how it relates to the problem I have. With regards to the setup manual linked to by Ferretuk, it does not give any greater help than the abridged version I was provided.
I have done some further investigation into whether the USB wireless dongle/adaptor is faulty. Being a specific one built for the Toshiba TV, it has no installation CD. If I try to install it to my PC (Windows), setup fails as there is no set of drivers that can be found to run it. Before I realised the TV needed a specific Toshiba I had previously bought the high gain Edimax USB wireless adaptor. If I fit this to the TV, the TV setup does not recognise it and thus will not give access to the TV wireless setup (greyed out). This Edimax adaptor works very well when installed to my PC. With the Toshiba wireless adaptor in the TV, the wireless setup becomes accessible, confirming that the TV does recognise it to the extent it knows the Toshiba adaptor in fitted. So, it must be at least basically working. The blue 'working' light on the adaptor does not light up, probably not until it is fully setup. When I try to install the Toshiba wireless adaptor to the TV and enter the SSID and passphrase, the reponse is always that "the encryption (EAS or TKIP) and security (WEP or WPA/WPA2) do not match" I have tried every combination without success and the TP-Link router is set to "Automatic" for AES/TKIP and is set to WPA/WPA2. The router does have an alternative "Enterprise WPA" which is Radius Server based. I have not tried that as I am not sure what that is and do not want to disrupt connection for all the wireless and cable connected devices using the router. So, as a next step I will run a temporary Ethernet cable to the TV to see if that side of the TV does work, and which may give the wireless side a kick. I will revert back when that is done. Thanks again for the various inputs. Regards Jonathan |
Re: SuperHub not recognised by Toshiba TV wireless setup
Try temporarily turning encryption off on the wireless access point and seeing if you can connect then.
You can use your old Netgear router for this test if you don't want to change any settings on the TP Link Also, small point -You have tried turning the TV off and on again (I don't just mean to 'Standby')? |
