New property suggestion/help re connection.
 
Hi all, I have recently moved in with my girlfriend, she has kindly enough agreed to accommodate my rather excessive MMO gaming ‘needs’ (how cool huh!)
However she already has a number of connections in the property, currently she has a TiVo box in the lounge which naturally connects to the TV & the broadband router, with various other bits connecting via the wifi – iPad, laptop, phone etc
In the bedroom where my PC will be living we have a vBox, I’m guessing though not 100% sure, that I can’t use the vBox to connect to the internet via the Ethernet port?

The easy solution is to connect via a wifi router, though i’m not a huge fan of wifi, whenever my PC has been connected to the internet previously it has been directly via the modem, my experience with wifi hasn’t been the best, from poor connectivity to low speeds, it just doesn’t fill me with confidence & i need a stable connection or there’s just no point.

Would anyone be kind enough to suggest a solution to my problem?

Hi and welcome...

You won't be able to use the ethernet port on the V Box for your PC. Your options are (in ascending order of speed/reliability and descending order of practicality):

1. Wifi - You've already assessed this. You could consider a wireless bridge and mount the access point for your PC in a location that has good reception and then run an ethernet cable to your PC.
2. Homeplugs - Use your mains wiring as a network
3. Run an ethernet cable from the bedroom to the router
4. Move the broadband router to the bedroom - This would mean 'adjusting' the splitter arrangement on the VM coax feed and then potentially introducing issues for both you and your neighbours or paying VM to come in a rewire their cabling...

I'd go for three personally...

Morning, thank you for the reply, option 3 does sound like the way to go, however I don’t think it’s ideal in our situation – thinking along the lines of ‘hi, I’ve just moved in, I’m going to drill a number of holes in various places across your recently decorated house’
I’m not sure that would go down too well.

It’s something worth exploring though.. as is the wifi :erm:

You don't need to drill holes to run an ethernet connection. I've got five running through my flat with no holes, and one going around someone else's flat and to the roof without needing any holes either. When you want ethernet without holes in the walls all you need is a longer/thinner cable.

Stupid question though, there’s no issue hardwiring multiple (Ethernet) cables from the Virgin broadband router is there?!?

I wouldn't use those power line thingies. They can mess up wifi and the speed you get will be very dependent on your power lines.

If you fit ethernet cable, hopefully inside the wall cavity, you can terminate with nice wall sockets and make it look decent. She might like the added value, small though it may be. Why not ask?

I have homeplugs on one PC, works great - get around 40Mb. Doesn't affect the wifi on the laptops/phone/tablet-thingy.

Well, maybe wifi's going a bit far then, but they can take out DAB, FM and other radio wavebands. Basically, they can create a load of noise so I wouldn't want one near anything else using RF comms. Perhaps I'm being a bit picky but I don't like badly behaving stuff like this.

Now-a-days PLC technology has developed, and they only inject small amounts of power into the mains wiring which should (in theory) avoid interference to radio waves.
