Does your amp not tell you?

If you really can't tell, switch the V+ output to stereo and see if it goes "dead".

(I assume you mean BBC1 HD? Either that or you're a time traveller)

I don't seem to have an option for this its either hdmi on or off

You need the bizarrely-named "HDMI Audio Override". Set it to off for stereo.
