Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
I've tried finding it in the manual, and online, but no joy, so...
On the old V+ I could archive programmes to my DVD machine if I wanted to. Does a similar facility exist on the Tivo, or have I got to play with my TV's output ports till I find one which I can pick up on the DVD's in port? Ta. A. |

Re: Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
Quite agree. As soon as my Tivo is working (installed, good signal, but the engineer has 'referred it to IT' as it refuses to fire up), I'll work on ways of copying. I've got a fancy new tele with multiple USB and HDMI ports, so between them all I'm hoping I can just record on the Panasonic DVD machine from whatever is playing on the TV. Not quite the same as the V+.

Re: Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
Surely he should have "referred it to the back of his van" and left you with one that worked??

Re: Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
Well, he threw the first one away (i.e. a brand-new Samsung TiVo), tried a second one, still wouldn't complete the 'connect' phase, changed various bits of cabling in the house (splitter, cable from that to the box), went and changed bits at the street cabinet, called in his manager, he came round, redid all that the engineer had done ("just to be on the safe side" [?]), etc., etc., finally said "Well, we've got 14db now" which apparently was a Good Thing as they'd started off with 1db (means little to me), still wouldn't work, so...
"We're going to refer it up to IT, sir," and goodnight all. Just been on to Virgin who are now pursuing the installation team to find out who-what-why. I used to have a nice V+ box (yesterday morning). Now I have BBC1 etc. Oh well, I can catch up on my reading. A. |
Re: Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
Development, although not very.
Saturday: one or two phone calls between me and an installation manager; one or two calls between me and a nice woman who handled problems for 'central London'. Result: nothing. Last comment by manager was that they were thinking of coming round and chucking out the 2nd new Samsung TiVo, and installing a Cisco instead. Do I detect a move away from Samsungs? Anyway, not a word since yesterday afternoon, and the nice woman's phone isn't answered today (Sunday), so I might gird up my loins and try the installation manager again. Why is life so much harder now than it was when I was young? Allen. |

And finally...
The manager turned up this morning with the Cisco box. 30 minutes later, all was working properly. Is there a lesson here for Cisco vs Samsung boxes? A |
Re: Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
At least you have it working now dude. Shame it took so long though. I hope you enjoy your Tivo, we have a Cisco and it has worked perfectly from day one. Our V+ is now in the bedroom and I can't believe how less capable it is compared to the Tivo.
Let us know your thoughts once you have had time to get used to it :) |
Re: Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
Being without tele for 48 hours ain't much of a hardship, Jem.
Yes, I've found a couple of useful bits on the TiVo (like catch-up TV being so much easier), but there's one or two things I think might have been dropped, in error, like the Archiving facility on the old V+. Also the Guide! As an old git, I'm used to words, lists, indexes, etc., reading from top to bottom, and the way the Guide has to go across the screen seems retrograde. Anyway, I'll give it a week before I weigh it all in the balance... A. |
Re: Tivo / V+ - archiving programmes
Ahh, the archiving facility. Yes it's true that Tivo doesn't have that function. Something related to Copyright issues. You can still record via Scart to your DVD / VCR whatever. You have to do it as it's playing back so do it when you're asleep.
