they are a bit late dude, it is basically about the new firmware update which got released severaly weeks ago. They haven't fixed all the bugs and wi-fi problems and I believe a new revision is out for testing next week.

In my recollection it's the first time VM have done anything like that. Total ******s to put out an email like that when the R36 release is such a well documented disaster.

BTW, VM say (to The Register) that it's not the hardware - it's the firmware that's the problem. Well we knew the firmware was a problem from day 1, 20 months ago; but the wireless hardware is poor - ndeed sub-standard and placed in the wrong position (antennae).

Looks like the modem mode will still be on in the near future. Thanks for the info guys.

Re: Hub software update

Modem mode is the only thing about the SH for which VM can take credit. Other gateways don't have it.

The original CG3101D that the Superhub was based on had it, they then removed it for a year and put it back on again.

VM being forced to (re)introduce modem mode was pretty much an admission of failure imo. I'm pretty much certain they wouldn't have done it just for the small percentage of customers wanting to use high end routers - it was for the rather higher percentage who couldn't get an acceptable service level from the SH itself.

Hi all,

I've just joined, so hello! :wavey: :cleader:

Wanted to post I received the Virgin Email yesterday. Have noticed that all streaming (lovefilm and netflix) have been affected.

Although, when doing a SpeedTest.net check it does think I'm getting 60MB broadband.

In your experience, will virgin just settle down and behave again?

Dan

Hi dantam

You can expect all sorts of answers here to your question. Let me say at once that I'm a happy Virgin Media customer. So when I criticise VM, it's from the sidelines and in support of suffering customers.

My 50 meg service came with a standalone VMNG300 modem. Likewise my previous 20 meg service. So I'm used to a separate router. When there was a cabinet fault, as a matter of course before deciding it was a cabinet fault, they replaced my VMNG300 with a SuperHub. I immediately put it into modem mode and no problems with the thing since.

Occasionally, so I can stay informed about how it's doing, I go to router mode - but I've never turned the firewall on. It hasn't actaully failed for me in router mode, but wirelss range was atrocious.

So that's real experience on my side.

Then there's the experience of customers whom I try to help on the forums using my technical knowledge:

1. Poor wireless range (since day 1 20 months ago)
2. Instabiity/reset to factory default (ditto)
3. Data corruption (a recent issue they'll resolve but shouldn't have happened)

Flying totally in the face of those realities, VM send out their stupid email. Exactly the wrong thing to do.

So, to answer your question: By going to modem mode, I've avoided needing to worry about VM settling down and behaving again. But in respect of the SuperHub, the history I've goiven above tells me that it's a doomed project and that VM's approach is absolutley inexplicable except on an "emporor's clothes" basis.

Hope that helps

Thx for your response...

I'm not sure how to go into modem mode. However, I combatted the crap wireless with a set of homeplugs -- one with Wireless N upstairs. That well covers the whole house.

The superhub is far from super..

Re: Hub software update

You can Google Super Hub Manual and you'll get details of going into modem mode.

Basically it's logging onto the SH with 192.168.1.0 in your browser and finding the menu item to put the wretched thing into modem mode. When you've done that, you can log into the SH but with 192.168.100.1 instead.

Be careful with the Homeplugs in modem mode. I've found that the Homeplug must not be the device coming off the SH port. The SH doesn't know how to handle the DHCP if you do that. It has to be a PC or a router (in my case SH-->Router-->HomePlug). That means buying your own router.
