Question About Wires ?
So after the install today I noticed it was done differently.
At my previous address, The black cable from the brown box outside came straight into the house and straight into the Modem. Today it was done a little different. The black cable from outside came inside and connected to some square "box", which was then placed inside a "Virgin Media Branded White Box". I was told this was to safe guard from lightning :/ Then another white cable was attached to the other side of the black box an then into the modem. My question is: Can I get rid of the White wire and the little black box and have the black wire go straight into the modem like before? |
Re: Question About Wires ?
I would advise not to remove it. Otherwise you could cause problems for other people.

Re: Question About Wires ?
There is an isolator within the small white box. You are strongly advised not to do the action you propose.
Why do you want to do that? |

What does the isolator do exactly? And again it wasn't in my previous install and didn't make a difference? The reason is the white cable has been left extremely long and just looks a mess. So I thought it would look much simpler and cleaner just to have one wire straight into the modem. |

Have a look at this thread to answer your first question: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/62...-required.html
You can go to Maplin and buy a shorter ready made cable. |

Hmmm all it does is protect from surges :/ I've had the Internet for years previously with no problems. Guess I'll have to take it off and see what happens. I can always put it back on... Also it might improve performance a little instead of going through an isolator and then another cable and then to the modem...one less wire... |

You're on your own then. Ignore the experts at your peril.

Also consider that VM staff members are on this forum.
Also what Performance gains will you get. You got the max download and upload speed the connection can give you... You wont gain anything! |
Re: Question About Wires ?
You will get virtually no performance gain from removing that surge protect unit.
Not only would it help save your modem but it could also stop you from frying your PC and whatever else you have connected to it. Everytime someone plugs something in you are creating a small surge. You dont want to be feeding anything back into the network. |
