FON Simpl & Security

My present set up is that I have a Virgin Media Ubee EDM2500 modem
This is connected to my Belkin Router 54G which I use to connect by ethernet cable to my Desktop PC and wirelessly to my Laptop and my Ipad.

I am now trying to set up a FON Simpl in order that I can log onto BT Fon Spots by either my Laptop or Ipad when I am away from home

In order to do this I have to connect the FON Simpl to the Virgin Media Ubee EDM2500 modem and my Desktop PC to the FON Simpl thus making the Belkin Router 54G redundant

I will then have to connect my Laptop and Ipad using the BT Fon Spots. Will this connection be as secure as when I connect through my home network.

Is there a way of setting up FON Simpl and retaining my Home Network

Re: FON Simpl & Security

You can simply connect the Fon Simpl to a spare port on your Belkin 54G and continue to use that for WiFi. Anything connected to the Fon Simpl will not have access to your home network but will have internet access. This assumes that the Fon Simpl is the same as my Fonera+.

There should have been setup instructions with it when you bought it.

Setup instructions were with the FON when I purchased it. My FON is set up correctly in accordance with the instructions but I just don't get any wireless signals. My ISP is Virgin Media. What do I have to do to obtain a signal.

Re: FON Simpl & Security

Wireless signals from what?

The Fon box is simply another router/AP on your network.

You need to set up the Fon WiFi SSID/password with a PC connected to it on the wired PC port.

Leave it as DHCP so it picks up its own IP from your Belkin and dishes out IPs to WiFi clients - by default these will be in a different subnet so there will be no conflict but the machines connected to it will not be able to access your network.

Once that is done connect the Fon Wan port to one of your Belkin LAN ports and it should all just work.

As I said this assumes your newer Fon Simpla is basically the same as my Fonera+

===

Here are the official Fon Simpla setup instructions http://corp.fon.com/en/products/simpl/setup/ They assume you don't want to set up your own SSID/password. One thing I did forget is that the Fon box will update its firmware when first connected - maybe you were not waiting long enough?

Re: FON Simpl & Security

My FON Simpl set up really easily too. Just follow the instructions Kwikbreaks has pointed out to you. Your wireless devices should have no trouble detecting the 'Myplace' signal. Do check that your Simpl has the right lights flashing. Have you connected your network cable to the right port in the Simpl? (The white one?)

This link may help too https://fon.zendesk.com/entries/2105...pl-get-started but only follow advice that applies to your particular set up.

If for some reason you still cannot find or access myplace for registration purposes you can connect to your Simpl GUI by connecting to it via a patch cable and typing in http://fonera.

If you are still having trouble, have a word with the FON forums http://boards.fon.com/forum/viewforu...f42e8928ae47d6

In very rare cases you get a faulty Simpl.

Re: FON Simpl & Security

Thanks for comments however it would appear that Virgin Media enforce a limitation in terms of MAC addresses connected to their Virgin Media Ubee EDM2500 modem which is the modem I have. Virgin Media are sending me a Superhub so hopefully all will be well and my Fonera will work
.

Re: FON Simpl & Security

If the modem is working with the Belkin then the modem simply will not see the MAC of your Fon Simpla just the Belkin router MAC and that is how you should be connecting it up. Sounds to me like support have sold you a pile of old hogwash.

Agreed.

I have read replies from Roughbeast and Kwikbreaks, thank you both, but I am still at a loss as to what I should do next. Since my last message I have obtained a Virgin Media Super Hub. My Fon is now set up as per the diagram on page 2 of 6 "Get started" So I have the Broadband connected to my Super Hub by cable, my Fon connected to a port on the Super Hub using the white ethernet cable supplied and my computer conected to the Black port of the Fon. My computer shows that I have a Local Area Connection but the only wireless network showing is only my Virgin Media and the Fon continues to flash 3 green LED's

Disconnect the ethernet cable from your Simpl to your computer - it isn't required.

You can connect your computer to either the Superhub by ethernet to a spare port, the Superhub by WiFi by connecting to the Superhub SSID or by WiFi to the Simpl by connecting to that SSID (Myplace by default I think). If you don't see Myplace then try a pinhole reset of the Simpl - should be in the instructions somewhere. If you still don't see Myplace then contact Fon support as it could be your Simpl is faulty.

Have you connected to the correct port on your Simpl? Correct me if I am wrong Kwikbreaks; the white one?

The Virgin Super Hub is connected to the white port on the Fon

Re: FON Simpl & Security

It says white in the Simpl instructions. I don't have a Simpl I have the earlier Fonera+

If the lights are like the Fonera there should be one solid green (power) and the other two should be green too and probably blinking as they are Internet and Wireless.

Yep! That is how mine is. That Simpl should be working. It's beginning to sound like faulty kit.

Have you carried out the factory reset?

Re: FON Simpl & Security

Yes I have but that does not improve the situation, I am returning the kit to Spain
