5m Ethernet Cable vs 10m, Any Difference ?
I will be re-aranging my room / computer and in doing so the Ethernet wire will have to be longer.
Will there be any speed / latency differences between a 5m cable and a 10m Eternet Cat5e cable ? What is the max speed of a Cat5e cable ? |
Re: 5m Ethernet Cable vs 10m, Any Difference ?
The correct question is what is the maximum length of a Cat 5e Ethernet cable without likely impairment. The answer is 100m.

As above and you will not notice any difference in performance.

Just make sure it's not near power cables, guidelines are a 50mm separation.
Then you will have absolutely no problems or signal degradation.. Because as said already its rated up to 100m so 10m is nothing. |

Well it will be running past power sockets so I guess the power cables are in the wall behind plaster ? But I will try my best to keep it away. |
That's fine :)

Even the worst quality cables will be fine up to about 20m, beyond which they start having problems. Most average quality cable becomes problematic at 50m+

I know this isnt ideal but in my living room Ive boxed off about 4 metres of skirting board to hide the central heating pipes and also have 3 x ethernet, phono, speaker and power cables behind the same conduit. These are connected at one end to my router and the other to my xbox, ps3 and Sky+ box, question is what kind of interference are you likely to see and what can be done in my circumstances to reduce the likelihood of any future issues. Would upgrading to cat 6 ethernet cable help as it has extra shielding ? |
Re: 5m Ethernet Cable vs 10m, Any Difference ?
I've never seen any problems from running ethernet cables near power lines. Twisted pair is inherently robust to interference.
Most Cat 6 cable is UTP which doesn't have shielding anyway, yet you can get Cat 5 shielded (STP) cable easily enough. |
Re: 5m Ethernet Cable vs 10m, Any Difference ?
Thanks qas, so are you saying cat 5 (STP) may be advantageous in my situation.
Re: Cat 6, I've only ever seen the shielded stuff and weve got some fitters in work running some data points in, so I was thinking of asking them to make me up a couple of cat 6 cables just for the hell of it. |
Re: 5m Ethernet Cable vs 10m, Any Difference ?
Qasi's saying the same as I do, Pabs. Just do it. Try not to tie the Ethernet cable to the power cable!

Re: 5m Ethernet Cable vs 10m, Any Difference ?
Well if you want shielded cable you can get STP in pretty much any category, but with Cat6 being pointless in general there's no reason to pay over the odds for it.
If you're getting cable installed and want shielded then go ahead - but I don't see any particular reason to if it costs more. We (at work) run 50m+ runs of unshielded cable near/along power lines including three-phase and >400v power lines without issue. The only time I've had an issue is when running VDSL2 and 100BASE-TX Ethernet within the *same* Cat 5 cable, and that only caused interference on the DSL and no issue with the Ethernet. |
You can run it near power lines fine, it's only guidance that there should be a 50mm separation which is nothing.
Doesn't majorly effect it anyway but effects are visible on an oscilloscope. |
Re: 5m Ethernet Cable vs 10m, Any Difference ?
Thanks for all the advice guys, I spoke to the fitters and they didnt have any cat 6 anyway, bugger,,,,,,, I will probably just get some off ebay for what they cost....
The ones I've lashed in have been terminated by me with a cheap crimping tool and they aint pretty :) , fiddly little gets arent they. I'd always wondered if it was a potential issue or not so worst case is it's cost me a few quid, which isnt the end of the world in the grander scheme of things. I'l try to run them as far away as possible from the power cables but at some point they have to cross path's. Thanks again gent's |
