Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
Hi,
I have just got a quick question about this new service virgin media business should be rolling out some point soon i have my own router so their super hub is not required but if that is the only device that they can give me is it possible to turn the super hub into a standard cable modem ? (like the residential super hubs) or can i specifically ask for a cable modem ? the package i am talking about it the virgin media business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Choice of 5,10 or 15 public static ip addresses does anyone know any information on this ? Regards Haz |
Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
Hi, I work in VM Business.
Currently the service is not on sale due to issues with the Superhub firmware for business. However it is only available with the Superhub and you can't put it in modem mode like the residental service. currently 10Mb or 20Mb is available for Business installs just now. |
Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
Hi Stephen,
i am currently on the 10mb fixed ip service and i have been supplied a cisco cable modem but when i move over to 50mb service i want to be able to use my own router and just have the super hub as a modem do you think they would be able to put that feature in the business super hubs (the ability to to turn it into a standard cable modem) i currently have a residential super hub (when i was on the 100mb residential service) would i be able to use this super hub instead of the business super hub ? however the residential team have asked for there super hub back but i haven't been able to give it them because of this query also IMO it doesn't quite make sense that this feature is not in the business super hubs as some organisations will prefer to use there own routers (i.e cisco routing protocols eigrp rip v2 igp . etc etc) |
Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
Our office actually has a VM Business 50meg service with Superhub. I think we got it just in a brief window before VM pulled it for techy reasons. We use a dynamic rather than static IP.
The superhub is in it's standard routing mode, not modem option which doesn't seem available. It's firmware is clearly different to the residential router, being "V5.5.2R04T15-BU" The fact we have a dynamic IP isn't a big issue as we don't hold servers locally. In any case the VM dynamic IP seems very sticky. We also have a dual WAN setup with a slower ADSL2 connection as backup that has a static IP so for the very occasional need of remote connections to the office the DNS is pointed at that ADSL IP. As we have dual WAN, both the superhub and the ADSL are connected into a Draytek dual WAN router. This works fine, even with the superhub itself being in a router mode. One seems to forward quite nicely into the other. We just make sure the Draytek and Superhub use different IP ranges. Speeds seem to be what we would expect. |
Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
You will not be able to use the residential SH for the business service.
Even though it doesn't have a modem mode you should still be able to use it with a seperate router as Rob mentions above. |
Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
Hi Rob,
interesting Ive got a Draytek 2920n router I've herd about lots of problems with the super hubs thats why i chose to purchase my own router i was previously on an adsl connection but to be quite frank the bt connection was well past its sell by date and my line (through a bt connection) according to open reach could only take 4mb dispite being less than 3km from the exchange but i never saw those speeds max speed i would get was around 2.30mb i had static ip addresses with my pervious isp which made it possible to run servers with no prob but through virgin's network (NYNEX) i get near enough the speeds that are advertised which is all good :) ------------------------------------------ do you think i would be able to have a similar setup to yours have the business super hub connected directly into wan1 on the draytek router but on the super hub change the ip address and subnet to a different range I'm not sure how the routing would work though for the static ip addresses (draytek routed ip subnet option) ---------- Post added at 15:44 ---------- Previous post was at 15:43 ---------- Quote:
as rob's is a dynamic ip address ---------- Post added at 16:30 ---------- Previous post was at 15:44 ---------- i will try and simplify this a bit Virgin Media Business Super Hub 5 static ip addresses directly connected into wan1 on the draytek router server directly connected into one of the lan ports on the draytek router how would i configure the routed subnet on the draytek router so that the server gets a public static ip address also would the draytek router have its own public static ip address ? and which router would provide the firewall security the super hub or the draytek router ? hope this makes more sense Regards Haz |
Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
One of the issues with the new business services is that unlike the 10 Mb/s fixed IP service, where the public fixed IP address ends up on your router, if you want to use your own router with it (which I do - a Cisco 892W) the single fixed IP address option results in that address assigned to the Superhub and your own router gets a 192.168.x.x address.
The good news is if you take the routable subnet option - which I did with 5 IP addresses then you can assign one to the Superhub and assign another fixed public IP address to your own router. Great if you want to form a router to router VPN for instance. In this mode NAT services on the Superhub are disabled. As has been mentioned, the new 30/3 and 50/5 business services are not on sale at the moment due to firmware issues with the Superhub. I can't imagine it'll be long before they return to sale though, as the key issues with the Superhub firmware are now resolved. I am aware of two remaining ones they are hoping for a fix for:- 1. The Superhub GUI sometimes freezes on login and you have to wait for it to timeout and try again to login 2. On rare occasions if the power is lost to the Superhub it will return to factory default settings, something that doesn't happen if you power it off with the button on the rear apparently. Also note that as I understand things they will only supply business cable modem service now where a cable already exists. When I had mine installed they would still pull a cable in as part of the install. Seems a daft idea when they are happy to run the cable in for a residential service. A way round it is if you want to have that installed first and then order the business cable service. Hopefully they will revert to new installs. I am very pleased with the business service. I have had congestion issues in the past, but after escalating the fault within the UK team I have seen them resegment my node within a week as opposed to the months they take if a residential user complains. All support is handled in the UK. If you have a fault you usually end up talking to the engineer who will there and then log into the CMTS and start diagnosing it for you. |

its a daft idea if you ask me but i managed to find a work arround Good Luck with trying to get your install sorted Maybe if you tried to order big red internet they might install the cable for you ? |
Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
Big red internet isn't cable, it's fibre so won't be going anywhere near the existing cable

Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
To Answer your Draytek questions ....
If you take the 5 (or more) static IP optiosn you would assign one to the Virgin Superhub. The remainder can be assigned to your Draytek router. A way to do this is to configure your servers on a 'DMZ' on the Draytek and then have it configured with static one to one NAT mappings from your public range to your private addresses for the servers. Yes the Draytek WAN port woudl also have it's own public routable IP address from your range. In static subnet mode both NAT & most Firewall features on the superhub are greyed out and inactive. Use the Draytek to act as your firewall. Also the Draytek (or other device) would then act as your DHCP server, not the superhub, as it would purely connect to the Draytek. What you have described is simialar to my setup, except instead of a Draytek I am using a Cisco 892W. It works well. Out of interest - if you got told no new installs from sales - how was it engineers turned up? I heard the policy now was they would install for large corporates and public sector customers, but not SMEs |

Thanks for the usefull informaition :) i will give that a go when the package is "finally" out am i right in thinking that the Draytek router's public ip address will be the servers public ip but the server using a internal Nat address instead using a dmz would i be able to assign more than one public ip addresses to other hosts that are connected to my draytek router ? (using a ip routing for 2nd subnet) see web link http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/kb_...2ndsubnet.html or would i need to configure static routes see link below ? http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/kb_...aticroute.html to answer your question the cable was installed by the residential team we was on a package called "the biz" which we thought included a static ip address but it didnt include that so we rang up the business sales team (after spending a full day on the phone being transfered about by tech support sales you name it we pratically spoke to every department in the company) and told them we was misssold "the biz" package and we wanted to move over to the business as soon as possible as our 15 day cooling off period was going to run out with the residential team so we was told that the 50MB package isnt out yet but you can get the "slow" 10MB package with a "fixed" ip address so we managed to get a free install because we was miss sold the biz package we had to pull a few strings abit with speaking to some of the managers after being messed about alot with some of the staff that clearly didnt no what they was talking about (we actually got transfered to the tv tivo department wtf lol) i'm not joking we was on the phone for hours trying to sort this problem out the service is great but the customer service isnt so great IMO Regards Haz ---------- Post added at 13:44 ---------- Previous post was at 13:35 ---------- and also when the engineers came over they just installed the cisco modem they didnt actually assign a "fixed" ip address to the mac address on wan1 on my draytek router so i was without full use of the internet for the first week i thought it was a problem with my router i ended up sending the router back to draytek as faulty but in the end it turned out that my "fixed ip" wasnt binded to my mac address but after all the problems i eventually managed to get the 10MB service working |

Re: Virgin Media Business 50MB Download 5MB Upload Static IP
May we remind you to read our acceptable use policy. That deals with things such as the profanity filter. It also makes it clear when PMs should be sent to CF Team or VM staff which is generally not for support or general assistance unless you have been invited to do so.
---------- Post added at 15:53 ---------- Previous post was at 15:47 ---------- To answer a question posted earlier: I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to use static IPs with the Draytek router and Superhub. Draytek supports various port forwarding options so different servers can be set to different internal IPs. We use our Draytek as the main router / firewall etc. It runs with a LAN IP range (say 192.168.1.xx) set differently to the Superhub (192.168.0.xx) which seems to omit conflicts even with our Superhub being dynamic. As far as I am aware VM business generally are not installing cable to new small businesses simply due to the costs of the install versus income. Larger businesses needing leased lines and such like are different due to the size of their account. |
