Superhub or Not
 

Hi, just had an email telling me that I`m up and running with a speed upgrade from 50 to 100mb (wirral area). Part of the email states

" Free upgrade to the Virgin Media Super Hub.
To make the most of your new speed you'll need the Virgin Media Super Hub as your current modem can't quite keep up with the new speed we've given you. Your new Super Hub could give you our fastest-ever wireless connection. Plus, it also means you'll be ready to receive your upgrade to up to 120Mb as soon as it's available in your area. It'll change the way you use the internet."

So I click on the link in the email that says get superhub, which takes me to my virgin media page which then states



We've done all the checks and it looks like your current modem is fine. Your new super fast broadband is up and running at the speed shown below..

Your new speed is up to 100Mb

If you're going to be using a wireless connection then you might want to swap your modem for a Virgin Media Super Hub, our latest combined modem and router with the best range so you can enjoy fast broadband around your home.

The Super Hub comes free with just a £20 QuickStart fee for installation and you'll automatically begin a new 12 month contract.

So my question is, do I swap my modem for the superhub ? and why does the email say "Free upgrade to the Virgin Media Super Hub" but then my virgin media says " The Super Hub comes free with just a £20 QuickStart fee for installation and you'll automatically begin a new 12 month contract."
If I do nothing and keep my modem then i presumably dont enter a new 12 month contract, is that correct ?

this proves quite nicely that VM love to talk out of their ass. Your current can handle 100mbit no problemo but they love to lie to everyone and tell them it can't so they can fob you off with a shub which doesnt work.

You are doing yourself a huge favour keeping your current modem and yes, it will not trigger a new contract renewal.

They need to change their marketing blab to "we want £20 off you so we can give you a sub-standard router with "beatable" wireless performance and to top it off, we are going to tie you into another 12 month contract"

I really don't know why everyone calls the super hub. I get excellent speeds and the range is very good as well. I can't help think that some people jump on the band wagon sometimes.

yours truely is a scientist and I like to base my opinions on experimentation and observation and I can assure you that having been screwed by 2 shubs makes my view perfectly justified

As can those of us for whom the superhub proved to be a piece of superjunk. :(

Thankfully modem mode seems to work as expected . :)

The interesting thing though is whether they make it a default feature on the new shub. I am praying they edge on the side of caution given past experience and have it there just in case. Knowing our luck they'll think it is the best thing since sliced breadand think modem mode isnt needed.

Same story again. The same people constantly bashing the Superhub and condemning it.

Me and many others have had the superhub for a long time and had no problems what so ever. However as with all things, only people whinging or complaining about something will post about it. Everyone else that is happy and has no need to find forums like this will obviously not post about their excellent CPE.

It is this fact that makes some people think that the Superhub is nothing but a pain in the butt, which is totally wrong.

For every 10 complaints about it there are probably a few thousand happy customers.

Great question OP , just what I've been wondering myself!

I've just been upgraded to 100Mb and the old VMNG300 seems to be quite happy so far , so I think I'll stick with it , at least for now.

I am pleased the superhub fills your requirements although I note you have said in other posts you use it in modem mode. As I have stated modem mode seems to work well.

When the superhub doesn't work for you and is constantly rebooting and losing the wifi it really is a pain in the butt.

I would beg to differ but opinions are 10 a penny and count for nothing.

I have never stated I use it in modem mode. Its been in router mode since the day I installed it myself as part of beta testing and the only reason I got a new one was due to moving house and no longer having that test account.

However both the current one and previous one have ran perfectly, no dropped wifi or wired connections at all. Decent wifi signal all round my 4 bedroom 1960s terrace home and my 2 bed early 1900s tennement flat. Both with solid think walls.

But as you say opinions count for nothing and therefor whatever anyone thinks is wrong.

I couldn't understand all the Superhub complaints until the R36 firmware update. It worked fine, now it randomly reboots itself.

Ive installed more superhubs in a day than you've experienced in a lifetime, yours works for you, congratulations, on the whole they are terrible.
