New VM account/Traffic Management

Hi to all in the forum :)

I’ve just signed up for Virgin Media Cable Broadband and their 60 meg service which is due to be set up with an engineer visit on the 11 August.

I’ve got a chart that I’ve downloaded (from the VM site) of the traffic management times/allowances etc. and I’m just wondering if these figures are applied every day, regardless of if you go over the quota or not, or if the restrictions only apply if and when you exceed the amounts stated?

My present service is ADSL and I get at best about 6.5 megs so the prospect of getting anywhere near 60 megs is a dream and even getting that speed cut by 50% during traffic management times seems, well, ok ;)

I was told that the engineer brings and fits the VM modem/router (from what I’ve heard, it’s a Netgear bit of kit?) on the day and given that there is an existing socket (fitted by Cable and Wireless some years ago when cable was first installed in this area) in the house, my guess is the engineer will use that existing connection point?

Thanks in advance for any info/help.

Sam

I'm a bit unsure what you're asking, blame it on lack of caffiene.

If you are asking if your connection is monitored every day, and STM "penalties" will be applied whenever you break the specified limits, then yes.

If you are asking if the "penalties" will be applied every day, if you break the limits just once, then no. They are only applied at the time you break the limits, and last for 5 hours. Then your "meter" is reset.

The superhub is a VM Badged, heavily modified netgear unit. As for reusing the socket, I suppose it depends on the quality of the line leading up to it.

The updated traffic policy up to day
http://www.virginmedia.com/images/table_30mb_800px2.jpg

Yes the policy apply every day and once the upload or download limit rich the stated levels it will cut off for 5 hours
This is still fine it lets you still with enough speed but the problem is ... if traffic shape get you then ping may go higher as stated in other threads by members...if the area is congested then speed as well may go more down simpilar to adsl ... but this very rear

About the box on the wall...when had my instillation was on the wall one white box from old Cable-London
Inside is a coax connector coming from the cable outside and guessing they will connect there direct the cables
Is also possible to add a VM new box but in my case they did not add new box so both is possible
Family next door has a black box from VM and my room has not

SH is a netgear modified by VM and many complaining about the wireless speeds so few have end up with their own router (but still in use the SH as can not change it)

Hi and thanks for the replies.

Yes, I guess what I meant was that regardless if you exceed the specified limits or not, if the restrictions applied.... so it looks like the restrictions will only be applied on those days that you exceed the stated amounts.

I'll download that latest info sheet about the limits... thank you.

The Cable and Wireless socket (I live in the North West of England by the way) is right next to my existing BT telephone socket and looks very similar and has what appears to be a standard telephone type socket on the front.

The box ( and connections ) goes through the wall to a box mounted on the outside wall and the cable then runs under the grass in the front garden to what looks like a triangular pavement access point, just beyond my gardens front fence.

While placing my order this morning with VM, the sales adviser said they could 'see' a connection to the premises, so it would seem that the connection is still 'live' at the socket?

Thanks again for the quick responses... much appreciated.

If they say that can see connection to premisses maybe even if is old
When they re-pull new cable for me they left the old one live  (i know cos i tested) seems like any one can go there and use 100mb connection and here almost central London they have broke this distributional box before and stolen internet from neighbour

But don't worry engineer will sort all out...they are good (it was an example that can be still live)

It doesn't work like that.

Each line does not have a speed. There is no distinction between lines. It's the MAC and security codes on your modem that determine what service you get over the line.

With the right modem you can connect to anybody's line (within a few miles) and get "your" service, without the right modem nobody can steal anything from any line.

He also did not know or at least VM did not told him if they cath them
