Replacing Sky Movies with Netflix?

Has anyone done this yet and what do you think is it a good substitute?

I currently pay around £100 a month for the whole VM TV package with 30MB broadband and I've looked on the VM website and I'm interested in the "essentials" package, basically I want to find the lowest cost of getting broadband with Sky Sports which is mostly the only channels I really watch which I've worked out would be around £65 a month including Sky Sports in HD and that also includes doubling my broadband speed from 30MB to 60MB

My friend has Netflix on his PS3 and he recommends it, so all in all would be around £70 and a saving of £30 a month.

If I rang Virgin Media up would they help me downgrade to this package? I know I'm not going to get the 6 months half price but I'm currently about to move house (maybe I should wait until I move and then do it and I would get half price for 6 months?) but the place I'm moving to has cable so it wouldn't be a problem but ideally I'd like not to go into a new 12 month contract but if I have to it would save me alot of money long term.

Or is there any other way to get Sky Sports and Broadband cheaper?

I'm wondering, how are you using the US Version? The UK Netflix doesn't have a lot of choices

That's actually an excellent point , Sky Sports is currently £22.50 on VM , it costs £29.50 to have movies also so if you plan to keep Sky Sports the movies are in effect costing you £7.00 compared to £6.00 at Netfix. Sky movies has a far superior and newer range of films and as someone as already stated if you have TIVO you get a great range of these movies on demand.

The way I do it:

Netflix accounts work on your geographical location - to sign up to the US you need to use a VPN Service from HideMyAss - this will allow you to connect to the United States as an 'american internet user' (laymans terms) when you fire up Netflix it uses the IP address which is now the IP address issued by you US VPN service to identify what content you're permitted to view.

I have an Ipad with the Netflix app, using a VPN connection to the states and then using the TV out connector to my TV.

Have you thought about LoveFilm?

For less than the cost of Sky Movies (just £14) you can rent as many discs per month as you like (DVD or BD) with unlimited streaming. They have also just launched a "unlimited streaming only" option (no discs) for 'launch price' of £4.99.

Now if only VM would add them as an app! ;)

But it's not less money if the plan is to keep Sky Sports in fact it's double the cost ;)

I really should learn to read and comprehend English  I just saw mention of "thinking of adding Sky Movies" and jumped right in as that's what I'm doing!* Oh well :(

(Though my current year's sub was a gift with a BD player so I'm not actually paying anything ATM :)

Though not relevant to the OP, there is a Lovefilm option of £9.99 p/m for unlimited discs with 2 discs at home at any one time, plus streaming. At long last, lovefilm have recently started adding HD quality for some titles.

Re: Replacing Sky Movies with Netflix?

I have done this. I have got rid of the sports/movies on my package and signed up to Lovefilm and Netflix. I have gone for the Lovefilm package that includes unlimited discs (the 1 at a time version) and unlimited streaming. This is £7.99 a month. I also have Netflix at £5.99 a month so £13.98 in total.

I was on a package at £115.21 and have reduced it so it is now £69.15 a month. The only thing I have lost is the Sky Sports/Movies and one of my 3 TiVo boxes. For me it was a no brainer. Overall a saving of £32.08 a month.

My new package includes XL TV, 100 broadband, XL phone and 2 x 1TB TiVos.

A Netflix and Lovefilm app on TiVo would be very welcome indeed!

Re: Replacing Sky Movies with Netflix?

Quick question, does anyone know how Netflix/Lovefilm streaming affects their broadband with regards to throttling? ie. Does it happen a lot?

I've just checked the traffic management policy on the VM website and it is a lot better than when I was with them although I have no idea how much data a film or two uses up. I used to be on the 10Mb BB and the evening allowance was (and still is) 1.5Gb, I'm sure this would be eaten up quite quickly.

Thanks

If money is tight, I'd be questionning whether you need VM TV at all - BT Vision may be a better costed solution for you with its combination of Freeview plus on demand movies, or maybe even just Freeview plus LoveFilm?
