I have been given a pc from a friend we already have four laptops connected to internet wirelessly via router and external modem how do I get the pc connected to the internet

So far as I know (which isn't very much) if the PC is wi-fi enabled it should just be a case of searching for available networks via the available networks icon on the bottom right hand side of the screen, clicking on your network and entering your security code.

From information received, Brian just has a plain desktop (no wi fi).
Router not allowing pc to connect.

I'm confused. He said he has four lappys wirelessly connected but now you say he hasn't? :confused: If they're all hard-wired and he only has a 4-port router then he'll need another piece of kit with more connections. Either another router or a hub or something.

Faulty or disabled network card. Check via device manager.

Faulty cable. Try alternative cable.

Try different socket on router.

Check DHCP range and MAC settings on router to ensure that more than 4 devices are allowed to connect and router is not set to permit whitelisted devices only.

That should do for starters.

Clarification, 4 laptops all wi fi then desktop (not connected to anything).

1)Cable from PC to router - simple and fastest but PC needs to be near router else long cable. LAN drivers usually already present.
2)A wifi device on PC - wireless to router.
Not too costly but needs to install drivers on PC.
3)A wifi bridge - wire from PC to bridge then wireless to router
Probably most expensive but gives wireless link without installing drivers on PC. I use this to connect printer to network.

3) can be done for well under £10. Not particularly expensive, not much different to a USB/PCI wireless card typically.

Prices are down on when I've looked then. I suppose you could get a cheap router D-615 and set it as a bridge with DD-WRT then you have a 4 port switch locally too.
