Very slow usenet
My speed readings through speedtest.net appear fine
But I am trying to D/L some stuff off Usenet (through the giganews server) and I am getting terrible download speeds. Before the weekend I was getting full speed downloads at 100 meg - Having been away over the weekend I hadnt tried for a couple of days and at the moment I am lucky to be pushing 10 meg. Has something changed? |
Re: Very slow usenet
Newsgroups are throttled on VM, do you have SSL enabled in your client?

I havent changed any setting since Friday (the last time I used it). If this has changed then this is a deal buster for me. If I cant use my 100 meg speed I cant see the point of paying for it. Considering the hassel I have been describing in my other thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34...i-do-sort.html I am really considering jumping ship. |
Re: Very slow usenet
p2p traffic gets throttled during the evening and weekends and that is on top of any other congestion as well. I have found that trying to use newsgroups over the week is pointless.

Re: Very slow usenet
Strange, i can max out my 100meg connection any time of the day using SSL (other than STM cap)
If speed tests are fine, could be an issue with the news hosting provider? |
Re: Very slow usenet
Well first thing this morning it was maxed out - right now (10:30 pm) it is 7 mb
|
Re: Very slow usenet
7MB/s sounds like its been capped, when i get capped to 50Meg from the STM, i hit around 6.4MB/s from my newsgroups
|
Re: Very slow usenet
I agree that is what it sounds like - but why am I being capped through STM?
My understanding was that there wasnt any STM for the 100 mb package and in any case when I first experienced this I had been away for the weekend so hadnt been using my service at all? When I was on the 20 mb package STM kicked in if I downloaded xGB of data within a certain time period. How is it now calculated? And yes this morning no problem - 100 mb DL speed. |
Re: Very slow usenet
Unfortunately 100meg is stm now :( 20GB between 9-4am or 10GB between 4-9pm, after 9pm its "unmetered"
Cant think of any other reason tbh, other than very coincidental local congestion |
Re: Very slow usenet
Have you changed the port number your client is using?
I set mine to 443 and my speed came back up to normal. |
