Analyse my Ping Traceroute

Hello guys,

I need help with my broadband connection and hopefully someone can take their time to analyse my ping traceroute. Below is some information:-

I'm a competitive console gamer and compete in a game where broadband connection seriously matters. I understand that ping is really important for gaming and I am desperate to try and improve upon my current ping/latency, I need to reach closer to 10 if possible.

Virgin 30MB Broadband Only Package
Average results for testing from www.speedtest.net and www.pingtest.net:-

(Ignore ping result above, I guess it's a problem with the server)

(all tests and traceroutes are with an ethernet cable direct from super hub router to my computer and without any other PC's etc. on in the house).

Below is my traceroute to this website:-

I'm also thinking about getting virgin to turn off 'interleave' as i've researched that this is undesired for gamers and can improve my ping slightly.

Thanks for reading guys, and I hope someone can help me improve my ping, if any further details are required, please post below :)

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute

You can't turn off interleave on cable.

The only way you can improve your ping is to move to a better ISP. VM are the worst ISP in the country when it comes to consistency of pings.

How about BT Infinity?

- Never mind, BT aren't available in my area.

Okay, could you go on www.pingtest.net, and paste your result here please? Just to see if I have a similar result to you, it would be much appreciated.

I am on the R36 firmware with superhub though, which drastically improved my jitter/ping

I don't know much about IT so i'm not sure what firmware is, but is it possible for me to change mine? How would I go about this?

What ping can I expect to have with VM 100MB broadband?

Hello guys,

I am a competitive console gamer and compete in a game where broadband connection seriously matters and so any help will be much appreciated. I understand that ping is extremely important for gaming.

My current broadband is 30MB Virgin Media Broadband, below are average speed test results:-

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/06/11.png
(Ignore ping result above, i'm guessing there is a problem with the server)

http://www.pingtest.net/result/65160937.png

My ping isn't up to scratch to compete with other gamers at the moment. So i'm looking into purchasing the 100MB Virgin Media Broadband package to improve my ping.

Anyone with 100MB Virgin Media Broadband, if you could post your average ping's below it would be much appreciated, just to get an idea for the average customer ping's with this package.

If anyone knows how much (if any) my ping will improve by, please reply, any help will me much appreciated.

Thanks for reading guys, any help will be much appreciated!

The firmware is basically what tells a device how to run. The R36 firmware is currently under trial and isn't available to the general public... pretty sure it won't be long though.

Either way if you want my true opinion, if gaming is the main reason you want a broadband connection then Virgin is a bad idea. As Qasi said, Virgin are the worst for consistency of latency, i know this first hand as i've been battling with Virgin for a while about the issue.

If you can swap over to BT Infinity, i'd strongly recommend that, or if not, just go to ADSL.

It's not all about headline speed with Latency, one doesn't necessarily affect the other, i could get an ADSL line in with a top throughput of 3 megabit and still beat Virgin hands down on latency and jitter.

You're going to struggle to get a 10ms ping on any cable / DSL service.

Your results don't look bad. What problems are you seeing?

Re: Analyse my Ping Traceroute

Lies. At times of low congestion you can get 10ms pings from Manchester just fine on VM. Swansea's closer so I see no reason why you couldn't, the only reason the OP's ping is so high is cause VM had the superb wisdom of routing traffic via their uber-slow Birmingham link.

Not all ISPs share VM's slow, fat pipe philosophy. BT for example get data from London to Birmingham 3-6x faster than VM
