60Mbps upgrade...

Hmmm, Virgin did this well - not!

Originally supposed to get the new superhub on Tuesday, no delivery... on calling them was told they had cancelled the order because the name on the delivery didn't match the name on the account - not true...

Today get the modem, installed and back online, only to find the the speed is now half of the 20Mbps that I had before activating the new hub...

Now been hanging on the phone for 20 mins trying to get someone to answer the phone...

Anyone else had similar problems?

"The modem", I assume you mean the superhub, since I believe that they don't issue SACM's anymore?

Go to 192.168.0.1, and log in with the login details printed on the base of the superhub. Then click the small "Advanced" text link that hides away under the big buttons.

Then click on "Connection" on the left hand side, and check what you have been provisioned for. It will be "Primary Downstream Service Flow" and the number you are interested in is the one marked "Max Traffic Rate".

this is what it says...

Max Traffic Rate 66000000 bps
Max Traffic Burst 10000 bytes

Re: 60Mbps upgrade...

Then you have been provisioned correctly. 66000000 bits per second == 62.9Mb/sec. They deliberately overprovision people to allow for tcp overheads.

What this means, is that your issue is not a provisioning issue. If you are using Windows XP or earlier, I would suggest running TCPOptimizer, but don't run it if you are using Vista or later.

Other things it could be is congestion, stm, etc. You don't say if you are using your own router, or if you are connected directly to the superhub. Nor do you say if you are connected wirelessly or wiredly.

If you are connected wirelessly, I would connect directly to the superhub via a ethernet connection, and see if it improves. The superhubs wifi is known to be weak.

You probably want to disable the firewall in the services menu.

Spoke to tech support, and there was a provisioning problem. It was fixed by them resending the activation 'packets to the superhub...

I see what you mean about the wireless not being the best...!

Re: 60Mbps upgrade...

What are you getting now on speed tests?

DanElms 23-06-2012 19:18

It comes back around 50Mbps when using wireless, and around 60Mbps if cabled into the superhub.

Much better!
